I only suggest getting the tires/rims widened out since I have spent some time on one,not the most width just the 6in. Over stock if you have any kind of slope,ditches,hills etc. I have done that and load my tires on my Kubota and feels a lot more staible. As for shredding,I take my loader off,and I have been threw some bad hills and ditches and it does great with the pull-type shredder.

Yes, I'm having the wheels set wide. Also, I'm looking for a pull type cutter, not a mounted.

Thanks, yes, the price was the last straw. When I got the JD to within $5K of the priced for the M7040, I figured for that little difference and that much more tractor, I couldn't go wrong. Plus it helps the that the JD dealer is local. I like both the tractors and dealers. I even like my current tractor, it's just on the small side and no cab.

What's a good source for weights? It seems silly to pay for these new, but I'm having a tough time finding anything on Craigslist. I'm keeping an eye out for local auctions.

I'm half tempted to go in with someone and buy 10 and split the cost or something. Just wouldn't make to much sense with the distance you are from pa.

10ft pull-type will be good for 40acres,and when you look back feel like your getting somewhere,just don't make the mistake and use someones 15ft batwing,then go back to the 10:laughing:


Thats the 7040's one with 8ft and the other the 12ft and the M5040 pulling the 15ft

When I had my Kubota, I bought my WW from my Kubota dealer. Turns out they were the same weights sold by EA at the same price. The dealer was getting other weights at the time so the 1k limit was met. I guess they could mix and match.

WEll i tried the dealer already, they want $200 plus per wheel weight. I would like to get four, but from EA they are about 107 a piece. Thats a heck of a difference except I dont need 10 of them lol

I looked for wheel weights sometime back and could not find any used that fit and no aftermarkets that were any cheaper than the JD's. Wound up trading to a 4wd unit which was what I really needed anyway.

Dealers are all different.:confused3: The #5050 weights that fit my L3240 were $378 for six @ 59 lbs. each. So $63 a piece.
I think, the place that casts the weights is in NC, and so is my dealer. That may have much to do with the price.

The thing about wheel weights is they'll never lose value because they will weigh the same 100 years from now as the day you put them on. When you go to sell your tractor add in that cost and explain that to the person. I have one set on my tractor but can't remember what I paid for them. I know it was somewhere around $1.25 a lb.

Thats absolutely true, but i have been wanting to buy 250 gallons of diesel fuel instead lol Sad thing is they cost about the same price. I dont really think 400lbs of weight is going to make a heck of alot of difference though so im having a hard time convincing myself $800 is a decent price for it.

You could go with liquid ballast. Consider Rim Guard if your dealer carries it. It's about 11 lbs/gallon and is normally about $0.30/lb +/-. It is totally safe for animals if you get a leak, does not freeze easily and won't rust your rims like calcium chloride. And in theory you can pump it out and into another tire if needed, so it is somewhat reusable. Steel prices are so high right now, so it is not a good time to buy weights.

Well $107 sounds alot better to me for wheel weights, but I gotta buy 10 of them to get that price! I already have the rears loaded with beet juice. I could not even think about using the loader without that done! I have to have my homemade counter weight on if I wanna do any serious loader work.

So one day I decided to suck it up and I just went out and bought the weights. Some I had to buy new and some I found used but it was one of the better decesions I have ever done. I can take them off if i want or leave them on if the situation warrants. I just wrote the check and forgot about it.

There are things in life we just have to pay for and not look back and for me weights were in that category.

I hear that always something won't or need,I found that I opened up just a farm account and put so much into it during the year and its a lot easier to spend what's in it on equipment,supplies,parts,etc cause that what it is in there for. And the wife's not watching it
