Rented a KX35 mini excavator last year and it started and ran on the trailer fine but started smoking and had no power to dig. Barely got it back on the trailer and found out the last person who rented it had filled the tank with gas. The rental yard drained out all the gas and she ran fine the next day.
The lubricity issue would be the main thing to worry about. Our M35A2 6x6 army truck has a multi-fuel engine that will run on gas or diesel but when running gas you need to premix with motor oil.

Well.. if the HPFP goes... seems like that's the biggest problem right now with ALL the major manufacturer's engines anyway! Shop foreman on Alaska's north slope (Prudhoe Bay, Kuparik) tells me that's the most common problem right now for them.

The pump blows up and pollutes the entire fuel delivery system with metal fragments. Have to replace everything backwards from the injectors (including the injectors)!

So, if you have to replace JUST the pump - you're still better off than you'd be with a new truck!

I'm a little surprised, with all the sensors on today's vehicles, that their is not a fuel type sensor.

I agree. I'm no engineer, but I can envision a sensor at the filler neck that would detect gasoline vapors and shriek like a smoke detector.
It would be great if they could make the filler neck not accept a gasoline nozzle, but that's not going to happen.

Works the other way around...Pretty tough to put diesel in a gas vehicle around here nowadays...The converse is possible all day long.

In the winter monthes we hire part time plow drivers. I have seen this done at least twice a winter for the past 15 years, all on Navistar engines. We drop the oil and filter, change the fuel filters and drain the tank and refill with fresh diesel. I have yet to see one damaged by this. It should be fine.

Hi Brian

My wife did this. Luckily it was Gasoline with 2 stroke oil added so there was some lubrication. Drained it down and cleaned the filters and away it went with no problem.

Did point out a few things to the wife
