Making a shelter taller..........

I have a Rhino Shelter with a 6' tall door. My dozer is 8'9" tall. What is a good economical way to increase the height of the shelter so I can drive my dozer into it........I don't want to dig down and make a pit because of the winter freezing the seeping in water which would freeze the tracks...........Thanks, Frank

why make a pit? go the other way- You already have a dozer. build up the sides with dirt. or use concrete blocks and build a wall and set shelter on it. seems easy /cheap enough.

Put treated poles in the ground that line up under the ribs/frame of the Rhino. Screw/nail a top plate to the top of the posts. Set the shelter on top of that. You could use 8' long posts and put 4' in the ground, or cut 12' in half. Get some strapping and put a couple of bands around the outside of the posts. Tack tarp material to the strapping, put another layer of strapping on top of the tarp and nail through to the first layer to keep the wind from peeling the tarp off.

Construtive criticism............building up the sides with dirt makes the inside to small. The amount of concrete blocks I'd need, I might as well purchase a new taller shelter..........Good ideas, keep them coming. Thanks, Frank

What I've done to raise a low lightweight structure is to build a "box" to set it on. Mine was two treated 2x6's on edge with a 2x4 flat on top for a gain of about 13 inches. Now I can walk everywhere without stooping, not just the center.

Yours needs to go up about 3 feet, so a solid wall would not be best. Maybe a short stud wall with plywood.

Can you modify the door opening so you won't have the raise the walls so much?

I had a 18'x20'x6' carport, I built a 2' wall out of blocks and mounted it on the wall.

I'd go with a 3' stud wall braced to the outside, then put some dirt on the outside to hold the braces....

Take the tarp part of the shelter off the frame........put it over the tractor........tie off tarp to dozer......or put heavy objects to keep tarp from flying away......throw frame away...... cheap and easy

I remember in the 1970s we use to catch 18 to 20 pound bluefish trolling from The Graves Islands to The Boston Lightship off the Massachusetts coast. The best recipe to cook the bluefish was to set the gutted fish on the top shelf of the oven. On the bottom shelf you put the catch pan and place a brick in it. Then pour tomato sauce over the fish with the remainder spilling into the catch pan. Cook for 15 minutes on 400 degrees. Then throw the fish away and eat the brick................Thanks, Frank

Thats funny. I was half serious about throwing the frame away though. Sometimes you can spend more time, energy, and money trying to alter a commodity into something it was never intended to be. Ending up with something that never works quite right and looks awfull. Cheers

You can get fittings to fit metal conduit or as big as chain link fence posts.
Just make the legs of your current shelter a little longer.

I tried for years to make them cheap tubing shelters better. Had one that was home built an nice 16 wide by 20 long by 16 high. keep my OC's in there. All it took was 7 inches of snow and then some rain the next day. It still came down. But back to topic, The best way to raise a temp building is to set it on concrete bunker block. Then use some concrete anchors to tie everything together. Call the local concrete suppliers and ask, they where alot cheaper then you might think. In my area they go for 100 to 300 dollars each with delivery for the big ones(24" wide by 36" tall by 48" long and 3000lbs).

I built a structure just like the one yellowfin provided photos of. Set my Shelterlogic shelter on top of it so I could park my mini-ex inside. My shelter is a peak style 8'w x 16'long x 10'h, and has been through 3 winters now, including 2010-2011 where we had massive snow accumulation. I wasn't good about keeping the top cleared, but no damage from the weight.
