my question is why was he out on bail to begin with? He was convicted
I know nothing of the case in question, but there's nothing unusual about a convicted person being out on "appeal bond"; i.e., out on bond or bail while a conviction is being appealed. And sometimes appeals drag on for many years, and there's no "final conviction" as long as those appeals are pending.
