my question is why was he out on bail to begin with? He was convicted

I know nothing of the case in question, but there's nothing unusual about a convicted person being out on "appeal bond"; i.e., out on bond or bail while a conviction is being appealed. And sometimes appeals drag on for many years, and there's no "final conviction" as long as those appeals are pending.

I know that some get out on bond during appeal but I didn't think that would be allowed for someone convicted of child molesting, rape or other violent crimes. We have a law now that allows the courts to keep someone locked up for life, even after completing a sentence, if they are deemed a sexual predator likely to do it again.

We are going to have to learn how to more effectively deal with this type of predator. I think we have enough evidence to show that this type of person is unlikely to change his behavior.

We need to make the people who sign the papers authorizing release of inmates and people on bail responsible for the actions of the person being released. In Kansas City, a man convicted of second degree murder was paroled in April, only to kill five people in one night.

In my opinion, those who released him are just as much to blame.

Are you in Kansas City? The only reason I ask is because I am originally from Kansas City and all my family is still there.

I remember a case in KC last year, or maybe the year before, where a guy told his friends that he wanted to kidnap a young girl, tie her up, rape and then kill her.....then he did it. When the police caught up with him, the fool jumped into the Kaw River trying to swim away.

I live close to Kansas City, about 40 miles southwest. The case you mention is the Keith Nelson case. He murdered a little girl named Pamela Butler. That case illustrates the fact that these animals may not be able to control their impulses. He abducted that little girl in broad daylight in front of other children who notified adults. The adults gave chase, but lost him. He had to have known that there would be an all-out manhunt for him, (there was) but he eluded police long enough to murder the little girl.

I am against the death penalty unless it can be administered to prevent the crime. It's too bad a cop or armed individual couldn't have popped this guy before he did the damage.

An eye for an eye. About 18 inches of steel pipe ought to do
the job. Don't kill the poor bugger. Just leave it in there for life.

The only thing worse than the sickos that commit these crimes is the slime bag lawyers that defend them !!! They are the real cause of our problems. Preying on other peoples misfortunes for their own personal profit !!!

Wingnut,

Jim, I have to agree with you .... it's getting so bad out there, one is afraid to even look at children.

Isn't that the saddest part? I saw a little girl lost in the mall the other day, and I knew I couldn't go up, pick her up, say let's go find your mommy, etc. Or I'd be one of those guys who "abduct" children!

It breaks my heart that I, who would never harm a living creature (except a mosquito,) am viewed as a vicious predator.. and can't help out a little girl (or boy!) in trouble. Is this really what our society has come to? I went and found a kindly looking lady to help the little girl. I explained the problem, and she rolled her eyes, patted me on the shoulder, and went to help the girl.

BTW, I read somewhere that a girl like Elizabeth Smart will bring $250,000 on the "open market." She is probably a sex slave somewhere now.

Anyone want to start a new planet with me?? I'm starting to get sick of this one.

Some people think that these types of crimes are becoming
more prevelent. I have not seen any numbers but my gut
feel is that the press just reports these crimes to sell adverts.
With global news, events like this one in CA are reported all
over the US and I think in the past this would not have
happened. And for some reason this crime made the media.

I don't know why. I can see the case where the girl was
taken from her bedroom at night but unfortunately kids are
taken off the street all the time. But those cases don't make
the news beyond the local area.

There was a little girl in eastern NC who was out riding her
bike who was taken by a neighbor. They found her body
shortly thereafter. But I don't think that story went national.
It was just as vicous of a crime as the one in CA. But she
was from a poor neighborhood so the crime did not get picked
up by the media.

When I was in elementary school in LA a police officer would
come to school a couple of times a year and show the bloody
movie on what happens to kids who get in cars with strangers.
I think this stuff has always happened....

Plain and simple the perps should be executed. People escape
from prison frequently. And they comment crimes while free.

One of the problems with these types of crimes is that Society
and our Criminal Justice System don't even come close to
understanding the people who comment these crimes. First
point to consider, "Criminal Justice System." Notice the
first two words. Tells you that the focus is all wrong.

The big issue for pedophiles is that they desire children. Its
as simple as that. Now ask yourself, can you change the
sexual desire of a heterosexual? Some people think you can
for homosexuals but I don't think so. If you can't change the
desires of a heterosexual person how can you change a
pedophile?

This is the problem that the Catholic Church mired itself. A
bunch of bishops should be in prison along with the priests.

So by definition you have a group of people, pedophiles, who
desire children. You can't change that even though people
have tried without success. Since these desires can't be
changed these people are serial rapists. But are punishments
for these people is lenient. If they rape they can go to
prison for decades but if they only "molest" its a slap on the
wrist. But its a very small step, if any from "molest" to "rape."
Why give these people ANY chance at all even after "molest?"

NC has a list of sex offenders on the Internet. There is an
offender within a few thousand feet of my house. They are
litterally all over the place. Good neighborhoods and bad.

But most perps of these crimes are family members. The CA
case is unusual in that it was a stranger kidnapping. Course
the family member perps don't usually kill. Another wierd
thing about serial killers/rapists is that they are often of
average or above average intelligences but have menial jobs
and issues with their mothers. The pedophile will also date
or marry someone who has children.... Supposedly this guy
was dating a women who had a daughter who lived in the
complex where the little girl was taken. They also have a
certain look/age/gender that attracts them. If you look at
the pictures of all of Ted Bundy's victims, the vast majority
had long, straight dark hair with long ovel faces. That is
what he was attracted to and who he targeted.

I had a series of events a few years ago that caused me to
study these freaks. To make a long story short at least two
of the women I dated during that time had been victims of
abuse by family members. As I learned more about this
wonderful subject I would not be suprised at all if a few other
women I have known where also victims of abuse. Abuse of
children is far more common than most people think. And it
make me made as ^&*() that the Catholic Church allowed
known criminals to continue to pray on their church members.
Absolutely appalling....

What is really a shame is that there are things I used to do
as a kid that my child will never do. I just wont let her run
off into the woods or down the street like I used to do...

Later,
Dan

While I will agree that there are some “real slime bag lawyers” out there, as there are slime bags in every profession, there are many fine lawyers that end up defending the worst of our society. The best part of it is that they usually don’t get a dime to defend the worst violent offenders.

I know one that represented a double murderer on his appeal to a states highest court. The man was guilty but the judge had made a mistake in charging the jury. The lawyer did his job and built the case for the appeal. He did not sleep well because he knew that the witnesses that had put this man behind bars were no longer available to testify. If the conviction was overturned, this violent man would be back on the streets.

The case was heard and the attorney did his job to the best of his ability. When the decision was handed down by the court, the conviction was upheld by one vote. I have never seen a person so happy that he had lost.

To say that lawyers are the cause of all evil is very unfair.
