There are less and less 'pain management' doctors now due to tightening DEA/ATF enforcement. Shoot, my wife who has RA must submit to a pee test once a month. Those on Medicaid must pay the $150 outta pocket for the test.. I guess they are trying to weed out the sellers by making it more expensive.

My BIL was on Oxycodone before he died. He got his through the VA. The first time he had to go to the hospital, and he brought his meds, they told him to leave them at home in the future. They were worried the workers would steal them. Florida was number one in Oxycodone sells for years. But they have put a lot of doctors out of business. It does make it hard on people with a real need for pain meds.

Lloyd,

In my 30 years in law enforcement I would say it is a toss up between both. A dependence pot or alcohol can be a big factor to domestic and child abuse. The use of illegal drugs brings on a set of problems not seen with alcohol (unless you are brewing moonshine). Not only is there a greater chance for legal issues with pot use but the problems that the dealer may bring into a home that the pkg store won't. Domestic issues with alcohol are more often reported just for the fact that use of alcohol is "legal" where the use of pot is not. One reason is a spouse may also use or because it is illegal they do not report the abuse fearing the problems that pot use may bring to the family. Family violence and child abuse is under reported, child abuse more than spousal abuse.

See... you add observations that I would have not thought of - dealer/criminal interaction with the family. I was only looking at it from the "closed" family unit - no outside influences.
Ya pretty well debunked part of the inquiry...

As a professional did you see anymore negative domestic situations from one over the other - drugs vs alcohol? Perhaps the mountie chose not to get into the discussion due to context - public forum.

One of the new "farm" products the government is promoting up here is Hemp with zero THC levels. You would apply for a licence, start growing/production and they would come annually to test THC levels. I went to a workshop were it was presented along with two other "normal" farm products. In Europe hemp is being introduced again as a valuable product for clothing(fabric), paper industry and construction industry(cement blocks are being made with concrete and hemp - the blocks are lighter, structurally sound, easier to handle and fireproof). Hemp was a huge product all over the world years ago for rope manufacturing. With less dependance on oil industry, the rope industry may return to this material.

Good discussion...

So, if someone can legally buy drug x at the corner pharmacy (rather than from the dealer) will they magically stop abusing it and stop stealing stuff to support their addiction? I doubt it.

What is this "stealing stuff to support their addiction?" I have an addiction to food. I crave to eat every day. However I've managed to order my life so I can afford to buy meat and potatoes.

IF pot was available at the local drug store for the cost of mass market production (say $5/ounce), plus 100% profit (we are up to $10/ounce), plus 100% tax (now we are at $20/ounce) I doubt many would be "stealing stuff to support their addiction" anymore than they steal stuff so they can eat.

The problem is ABUSE. Down here in Mississippi I see flagrant abuse of food compared to Northern Virginia and Vermont.

I used to abuse jalapenos. I wanted all my food hot and spicy. I have backed off.

I smoked tobacco frequently from about the age of 16 to 30. At one time I was smoking about a pack a day, like my Mother and Father were.

I backed off and can't remember the last cigarette.

And if someone could grow pot as easily and legally as tomatoes they probably wouldn't need to steal to support their tomato habit or pot habit.

No legit comparison.

A hungry man will take a job to eat, if he is just hungry.

A dopehead won't. He would rather steal or beg.

Plus, you can't buy dope with foodstamps!

Marijuana is considered a gate way drug for a reason, it lowers inhibition's. after 10 years working as an EMT / Paramedic and 30 years in law enforcement I will say I have seen to many young people die with a needle in there arm, straw up there nose and family saying "I knew that they smoked a little pot and didn't think anything about it."

It's inherent in being an EMT and/or LEO that you are going to see the worst of the worst. People who quietly do a little of this or a little of that on the weekend never come across your radar, unless they are very unlucky (e.g. searched at a traffic stop). I don't mean to invalidate your experience. There are absolutely a lot of people with substance abuse problems, who started with "light" drugs like alcohol and pot, and who progressed to overdosing on something harder. An EMT/LEO who sees these people confirms to us that it can happen, but tells us nothing about how often it doesn't happen, because when it doesn't happen, by definition, the EMT/LEO is unaware.

Yeah,
And what we've done in this country is so much better how?

Its not better, obviously, but neither is the other way of just opening it up. There still has to be limits.
