Greetings to all

I have a 1999 MF 1225 Hydro that has a rear and mid PTO with a 1232 60" belly mower attached. Recently I have experienced a problem where after I have been using the mover for a while and have to turn the PTO off to move something out of the way or just take a break it will not come back on. If I let it sit for an hour or so it is good to go again. I have checked the switch and that seems good. There is a relay under the seat that seems to be ok (gonna replace it anyway). I have heard someone talk about a solenoid for this tractor but I cannot find where that is. Does any one have any suggestions as to what this may be?

I assume the toggle switch powers an electric clutch somewhere that then engages to turn the gears.

Thanks to all

On my MTD Pro zero turn I was having problems are cutting haft the back yard, disengage and it wouldn't reingage. I'd let it sit a while and it would reingage. I put a trickle charger on it and i think I discovered the problem. Low voltage to the electric clutch. The battery is two years old which is kind of stretching it. Could it be your battery getting pulled down?

Not likely on this tractor. It uses a car size battery and has a alternator also. Battery is strong and alternator is at correct output.

I have a Troy-Bilt zero turn. On any mower that has a battery there is a charging system for that. Most have a generator under the flywheel. If your electric clutch was kicking out due to low voltage there is a problem with that system, either in the generator itself or the wires somewhere along the way. Once the mower is running it should be self powered even if the battery went completely dead. As long as that trickle charger is doing the job I don't know that I would bother with fixing it but if you have the right tools its not very hard.

Thanks for the reply though.

I just ran across this thread... i have a MF 1225... the last year the pto hesitated a couple seconds before it kicked on running belly mower 1232. The first use of 2020 it shut off & wont start back up. Getting 12 volts at connection under the seat... bypassed toggle switch..nothing. Was wondering what ever happened with your PTO prob?

There are 2 things that you can check. 1. There is a relay mounted behind the seat that can go bad. If you have power you should either hear that click or you can feel it when you throw the PTO switch. The other thing is a solenoid. This is what was wrong with mine. It finally quit all together last year so I had to replace it. It is Massey Ferguson part number 3605668M91. It is very easy to change but you have to move some other things out of the way to get to it. I bought mine from Jacks small engines and it aint cheap ($350.00), but I have had no problems with the PTO since then and I wasn't going to let a $350.00 part stop an otherwise functional machine from working.

Jacks Small Engines Search

When I get home I will attach a pic of the relay and the solenoid.

I'm having the same problem with my 1225. Does anyone happen to have the relay part number? I'm just going to switch out both at the same time. Thanks.

Could someone get a pic of these parts-both the relay and the solenoid?
I would like to see what makes these parts so expensive.

The relay on the 1225 is mounted on the back side of the seat mount. Fold the seat up and the bracket under it and you will see it. The solenoid is basically under the seat. You have to remove the seat, the levers and the plate the levers go through. Take lots of pics before and during so you know how everything goes back together. Once you get all the stuff off it's easy to get to and easy to get off.

There is no reason at all that these parts are so expensive, except some of the parts for these machines are made to order as there is very little call for them. But the $$ you save doing this yourself will pay for the part.

Does anyone know the part # for the solenoid?

One would think it would be rather common, but I have not been able to turn one up online.

Local dealer wants $350.

Thanks

For the record, the part # is a 3605668M91
