Is it possible that the wrong clutch/PB was installed ? and is this possible since the tractor does drive and shift ok.

I have to talk with this man shortly and let him know what I have learned so he can make this right.

Yes it's highly possible the clutch fingers are set at wrong height or pto clutch got warped on rejoining tractors halves.

T17876_________UN01JAN94.gifYou could have an independent pto option. That would be a single stage clutch for the foot clutch with a separate clutch for the pto. Do you have a lever between the two shift levers? If you have a lever like this, lifting up on the lever engages pto clutch and pushing it down disengages it.

No it does not have a independent PTO

The 1020 has a live 2 stage PTO clutch...
I would suspect that your clutch is stuck due to inactivity...
I have no idea how to free up your clutch without splitting the tractor in half...
I am sure that a competent tractor mechanic could possibly do that for you...
You need a different mechanic...

Turbys
For the record 1020 could have four(4) pto options
#1 no pto
#2 trans driven pto
#3 dual stage clutch referred to as continuous pto
#4 hyd ind referred to a live or independent.

Those were the options when I sold 1020's when they were new.

Thanks for the info Tx Jim...

Another possibility could be the clutch pedal position could be wrong. There is a 2 position adjustment on the pedal which needs to be in correct position depending on if it is a independent pto or two stage clutch. The pedal should be near vertical on two stage clutch and maybe at 45 degree angle on independent. remove bolt #6 from the side of the pedal and pull the pedal up until other hole aligns if it is incorrect hole.

Mechanic replaced a clutch/pressure plate on recently purchased 1020 John Deere, the clutch is single stage, when a bush hog is attached and you attempt to engage
the grinding begins which will not allow engagement of the bush hog.
The only way is to pre-engage, and than start the tractor. The mechanic says this was a flaw with this type of single stage clutch setup and this is why those who purchased
these single stage John Deere's got rid of them.

The tractor was purchased very cheap because the clutch was out and the repair was justified for this reason. Does this make sense to anyone or is this mechanic
blowing smoke because he did something wrong during the installation ?

Please explain how option #2 worked.
Did the PTO stop every time the clutch was pushed in?
Did you have engage the PTO lever on the side with the clutch pushed in?

If so, sounds like what he has (but never knew JD sold this set up)
