Mike takes exception with everything I wrote. Is it a drive-by post now Mike? I did not post to sit here all day and chat. I posted 'cause I was concerned that some advice could be better thought out. That is it. Agree or not, your replies should have had more consideration prior to posting.

I addressed what you wrote, point by point.

Since you obviously have seen 'bad or dangerous' advice on TBN or you would not have started this thread, please post one specific example of bad and/or dangerous advice. Also include how you corrected it or reported it to a Moderator.

I'm a relative newbie here and haven't earned my stripes, but I'll say that I have seen at least two or three occasions where folks have recommended something that has somewhat high safety concerns.

On the other hand, I've never seen anyone intentionally give bad advice, it may just be what has worked for them (possibly for decades), and would in all likelihood work for the person they are helping out.

I think that's the core problem with the request in this thread, that people don't know what they don't know. I think the key takeaway is for everyone that is asking for advice wait until any particular tip has had enough eyeballs on it to be 'vetted' by the community, and then pass it through your own filters for common sense and self preservation. :)

Well said . I totally agree. Might I also add that its a shame that some people aren't to sensitive when they critique someones ideas etc. I know many people who have posted projects, only to have the 'ripped' apart by some choice ones here, and they dint post anymore.
In the best case deal its a give and take here, but to criticize, then we just deplete the various ideas..

I wish that posters starting off with "well I never did such and such or have no experience with so and so" and then go publish a wiki would leave more room for those the have done these things or have experience with those things.

Hmmm . . ., I've been guilty of that. I hoped each time that what I'd heard or read might be helpful, and I assumed by saying I never did it myself the poster would take the information for what it's worth, and maybe my comments would encourage others with more or better information to chime in. And I think it always left room for anyone else to join in; hadn't heard before of using up all the room for other posts. That's a new one to me.

Is anyone else concerned?
Some members think they are knowledgeable on all subjects and frequently give bad or dangerous advice.

Yes, but it is really up to the readers to make the call.

I would propose, if you don't have knowledge on a subject, sit back and learn something. No advice is better than bad advice.

Unfortunate that some people will always say something, even the wrong thing may be their "right" thing.

Don't intend to tick anyone off personally. I just find when someone is in need of help, due to lack of experience as I have been on occasion and posted needing help, bad advice could get people in trouble.

Agree, perhaps calling some poster out, in a non-confrontational way would add to the knowledge. You would at least offer another insight or opinion.

With all sincerity, Dave

Your cool, touchy subject. IMHO :) Don't sweat it.....

Wow, this is right up there with "The best kind of oil to use is..."

After seeing (and regretfully :ashamed: ) given bad advice, I've learned to take all opinions given and use them for further research. Also, the more likely bad advice is to get me killed, the less likely I am to use wisdom gleamed from a forum.

I've spent close to $8,000 (so far) having "work" done by two previous amateur-owners of my house fixed, and redone correctly by a licensed contractor. I don't know if they got their "knowledge" of home construction off some internet forum, or if they were just a couple of idiots that figured owning some tools made them carpenters, but I'm a firm believer of using professional help for important jobs.

This thread has started to generate a lot more heat and smoke than light, but I hope new members will remember to take all answers to their questions with a grain of salt.

"Let your mind be your judge"

We are all grown ups for goodness sakes, read it, think it through, research it, then decide and take responsibility for your own actions. Sheesh.

Now, with regard to Mike bringing up the best oil......

1. R4s are better than Ags
2. Hydro is better than Gear
3. Green is better than blue
4. My momma's pie is better than your momma's pie
5. The best brand of gun is a winchester
6. The best brand of truck is a Dodge.....
