Just posted in another thread:
The Pinto was actually a tough car, and apparently theere was a fix for the exploding problem.
Perfect example of what we're discussing. The original Pinto design did not have an exploding fuel tank. In fact, engineering had recognized and resolved the issue of possible fuel tank puncture by designing the fuel tank with an internal rubber bladder, similar to the fuel tanks used in military aircraft since WW2. But the bean counters elmininated it from production, due to the slightly higher cost.

The engineers tried fighting them on this one, but were overruled. Known problem, predictable outcome, the rest is history.

Look at a 20 year old Camry, and you'll find a car that's still nearly as reliable as the day it was made... but also still as boring and frustrating to anyone who enjoys driving, as the day it was made. :ROFLMAO:

We're all different. AND we change as we age.

When I was a young man I drove a Mustang GT convertible. Now that I'm about to turn 80 I'd take the Camry every time. Except that where I live a car would be useless so I have the SUV version of a Camry, a Toyota 4Runner Off-Road edition. Boring as hell - but I know it will get me there and bring me home. Priorities. An "exciting" ride I don't need!

I wouldn't go near a German car, either. I think they must be for people who secretly admire the Third Reich, because something is clouding their reason. They are unreliable, overpriced, and extremely hard to repair, and the parts are priced like diamonds. There is a reason why used Mini Coopers used to go for $4000.
When you say overpriced, are you referring to the Porsches that keep going up in value, or at least hold their value extremely well? And is that despite them being deemed unreliable by you?

I'm not exactly a big fan of German vehicles, but there seems to be several that are reliable, reasonably priced, and easy to repair.
