Yes, it would have to evaporate, sort of like cutback asphalt, but not as effective.

the light fractions will evap.. but will leave a heavy greasy/oily mess.

ditto what another poster said about applying diesel as possibly / probably violating some epa or other environmnetal law.

that's why tack and prime and seal coats are being mentioned. don't want to run afoul of the law.. or get the OP in trouble.

Leeboy makes or made? a nice ~250 gallon tack wagon, perfect for small paving jobs like gas stations, patches, and turn lanes, I was surprised how nice it shot.

Soundguy, dumb question, but what does prime or tack cost per gallon, I know we typically pay $0.25 per square yard in place, and use mostly Special MS or RS-2.

i pulled an old inv from EAMA and it whad been 2.09 per gal delivered .. price per unit is less.. but they hit you with a fuel surcharge and delivery fee.. which is why we buy in bulk usually. I think it went down last time. probably closer to 2/gal or just sub that.

A local company takes the old stuff and mixes in some liquid of the liquid they make asphalt with, then spreads it. They only do it during the summer so that it will set up.
I used ground up concrete, but I didn't have free asphalt fines to work with. I have seen how it looks when not enough was used (about 90% of the jobs done around me) -- it looks bad, and doesn't offer enough coverage to compact well, so it doesn't work well.

There is a process called cold mixed in place asphalt. They run a reclaimer (think 8' wide, 19" deep, 400 HP rotatiller, with milling teeth) through asphalt and limerock, and inject emulusions, and shape/compact behind the reclaimer. I've never seen it done, but I understand its a rough riding, stop-gap repair.

There is a process used similar to the above that uses a certain amount of Portland cement in it as well, creating a type of soil-cement.

i've done both. depends on the operator and the finish crew behind the machine.

if you drive in crescent city, or any of putnam county on roads near wet areas.. you are likely driving on soil cement stabilized roads. and a very good chance I built them. :)

The co i work for has done extensive contract work for crescent city, putnam county pomona park areas.. from 2002 thru 2005.. some of it fema money.. etc. some general fund stuff.

I'll add in that along with workmanship a lot depends on the original quality of the road they are breaking up and reworking. If it has quality aggregates and specification pavement materials it will rework into a good product but if it is crap material then no matter what type of cement (glue) you add or how much glue you add all you end up with is sticky crap. If what is missing from the mix is hard stone with sharp edges then adding anything else other then stone is a waste of time and money.

i can tell you we had to dig out lots of white clay ( gumbo - unsuitable material ) in many of the areas. it's like a sponge.. killer for a road...swells and subsides with moisture level..

I'm working on a road in Dunelleon right now that had phosphate tailings/slurry dumped there for almost 50 years, now its ~5 ft thick, and it looks just like gumbo clay, but actually is slicker. We under cut 24" below sub-grade (48" from finish asphalt grade. We will see how it holds up.

CR326, we reclaimed 4.5 miles, widened, and paved 2.5" of SP-19.0mm structural and 1.5" of FC-9.5 top lift, and I can feel at least on spot where we should have under cut the gumbo further. It has a noticeable dip right where we ended the undercut, and I only finished that at Christmas time.

BTW, on 326, we backfilled the undercut with millings

in areas where i can't get good stabilized subgrade. if it's wet i like soil cement. if it's dry.. I like black base. sometimes cheaper to use black base instead of limerock grade if there is alot of traffic control. quicker= save $$ on traffic control.. to offset asphalt over limerock cost.
