looking at various riding lawn mowers over the years. most of them all have a hydrostatic transmission, and then a differential for rear tires. and then actual turning wheels up on the front of the riding mower. for riding mowers, a differential makes sense.
looking at some "zero turn mowers" is a different story. there is no differential. just 2 hydrostatic transmissions, one for each main drive wheel in rear of the machine. and then you have gauge wheels on the finishing mower deck/s. a zero turn would operate much like a "track" machine. looking through some websites. they make L shape instead of a large O body shaped hydrostatic transmissions. and most of the L shaped hydrostatic transmissions were labeled just for the purpose of a "tracked" machine.
