Even with all the redundancy built into our aircraft we still routinely practice landing with failed primary flight controls.
We do this in the simulator during our recurrent training.
Not only is it possible to fly an airplane without most of its flight controls, it has been done. Back in the late 80s Capt. Al Haines landed a United DC-10 in Sioux City Iowa after a loss of all hydraulics. That aircraft has 3 independant hydraulic systems but no mechanical backup, an explosion of the number 2 engine caused fragments to penetrate a junction where all three systems passed in close proximity causing all fluid to be lost.
Unfortunatly some people died in that accident but the heroics of the flight crew saved most of the passengers.

That was some incredible flying skill. Too bad so many people died. But despite the tragedy, it could have been a lot worse.

Hey, if a person believes in conspiracies, then all they have to do is to say/allege something then it becomes a fact that supports their grandiose view of how somebody is out to get them. Logic and facts, provided by mossroad and others, take a flight of fancy and are best ignored or attacked.
Else they have to admit there is no conspiracy, and that is not permitted when they are in denial.

An old dude taught me that saying a long time ago. To this day, I try to build redundancy into my mission-critical systems by having two complete systems and a good set of spare parts. However, in this economy, bean counters tend to question every purchase. I can't blame them. I just have to make an argument that if we are down for X hours, we will lose X dollars. If they see fit to justify losing X dollars while we are down, then so be it. At least they knew that going in and I have a clear mind. ;)

I am finding that when I am wondering what is going on with this disaster that I am ignoring all news statons and coming directly here to TBN to see what the experts have to say. Thanks guys for keeping me informed. A real great bunch of people all connected by having tractors.
