Modified Sine Wave Inverter,, Is There A List Somewhere??

A standard generator produces AC via the windings, but the voltage varies if the engine RPMs vary or oscillate which is not healthy for what is plugged in. (Avoid running out of gas during operation). They do produce a true sine wave.

I want to correct my post. Standard generators produce a sine wave but they are far from true or pure. They vary in voltage as I did mention, but they also vary in frequency and are not very clean.

This discussion got me curious. I am looking for a comparison sheet that shows output quality of inverter generators.

AND, there are varying types. Some make excellent quality power (being an inverter) all the time. Some only start making power (using an internal inverter) when the AC incoming, quits.

Absolutely. Our first UPS (25+ years ago) was the type where power came in, inverter #1 made DC power to charge the battery. Power out was inverter #2 which took DC battery power and converted to 115v AC. It was $400 back then...

Interesting thing is, any laptop I've ever seen, used or owned works on exactly this high end/exclusive technology.

I don't like getting too deep into theory. It's beyond me. BUT, i am curious, why not all generators produce clean power? I know generators have varying numbers of poles and I guess this figures into the quality somewhat. Just don't ask me how?

Your small “one lung” generators can’t maintain a consistent speed by only going bang every 2 revolutions. Even if the frequency and rpm look good, the crankshaft is not maintaining a smooth speed...half the cycle it is moving too fast, and half the cycle it is moving too slow.
Multi cylinder diesels have allot better of a time.
I have a 1 lung old school Honda, that holds a pretty good freq and voltage, but the lights always have a pulsating quality.
The pto generator is nice and smooth—just as good as shore power.

Even my single cylinder Yanmar air cooled makes nice power. That is, it has never blown anything up and the lights all work fine.

A friend/neighbor had an expensive name brand brushless PTO set maybe 20 or more KW, on his ford 5610. His lights flickered like crazy. He was a bit of a jerk, so it was kind of funny. I never did figure out why the lights flickered. I thought an out of aligned PTO shaft, but he claims that he corrected that without effect. Funnier still is that he was "supposed" to be an "electrical engineer".

Lot’s of copper and flywheel mass doesn't hurt either!
