But what happens to the water in the fuel as it goes through the system if it's emulsified? Does it go harmlessly through motor and out the exaust as water vapor?

No different. I believe that the Mr Funnel will trap more water molecules than the fuel filter. Thats the whole purpose of it. Better be safe than sorry. I always add any additives after the fuel goes into the tank.

) If I were you I would find a different place to buy my fuel. I've put over 2000 gallons of diesel through my pickup and I have never had any water show up in the water separator/fuel filter.

I hate to burst your bubble but ALL fuel contains some water, diesel more so than gas. The fuel filters on your tractor and truck are not designed to remove all water and other contaminates. They do remove enough so that the injectors, etc all work fine. However, Mr Funnel, according to their propaganda on the web site, will trap any molecule up to .005 inches in diameter.

Every diesel storage tank at every filling station has water in it. Same have more than others. Mine had it. It usually settles to the bottom but does mix with the actual fuel.

Go buy a Mr Funnel, then buy some diesel from your local filling station. I will wager that you will get close to 1 cup of liquid that does not make it thru the Mr Funnel per 5 gallons.

To add to what others have said, I put my treatment in AFTER I use the Mr. Funnel to fuel the tank. I had thought of treating the whole 55 gal. tank, but then realized it would not work then with the Mr. Funnel. I would rather keep ANY water from getting into my tractor, and I also ALWAYS refill the tank at the end of my useage for the day to avoid condensation. Get a Mr. Funnel, fill it with water, and just TRY to find a drop of water getting through. I can't. I think it's really inexpensive insurance. Wish I could get insurance for my car, motorhome and tractor so cheaply. John

I just bought a couple of 5 gal Diesel cans (OK, plastic) to use to with my NH TC35D... and as of the beginning of the year, in NY they can only sell these new fangled "leakproof" cans... and that means that you have to push on the spout (there's a lip that fits over the edge of the opening) to open it so the fuel can flow. How would this work with the Mr. Funnel? I'm concerned that I won't have enough hands to do this and not spill it all over the place!

I like the idea of Mr. Funnel, but not sure how to use it with these new cans... Ideas?

Stoney, as I think I stated earlier, I bought the small Mr. Funnel. I have the same type container, and I just sit it up and push it down on the lip of the funnel. Since the funnel is pretty small, I don't have a problem doing this, however, you have to make sure you aim the spout a little away from the element in the middle of the funnel, or it will splash out and over the funnel. Sometimes I DO hold the spout back with the other hand, just depends on my mood! John

I'm interested in the answer to this question too. Does a small amount of water in diesel with an emulsifier in it do any harm to the engine? Do you need to remove water at all if you routinely add an emulsifier after refueling?

Sorry for the belated reply.

All diesel engines are tolerant of a certain amount of water in the fuel. All diesel fuel has a percentage of water in it. That is what causes algae to grow in stored diesel.

Most engine manufacturers will tell you what percentage the engine will be able to tolerate without damaging the injection pump or injectors.

The fact of life is that ALL diesel has a percentage of water in it. You just want to keep that percentage as LOW as possible.

It's interesting, I read the thread and decided that I didn't really need one. I use fuel from the only Diesel place for some distance and it's used heavily. I figured that with fresh fuel from a modern facility that the tractor could handle what little water/stuff might be in there.

That and I couldn't find anyplace that sold it locally . . . and I didn't get around to placing a web order . . . and so I convinced myself that I didn't need one to make up for my laziness in buying one..

Cliff, exactly what I did. Place I buy my fuel is the same place I have been filling my truck up at for the last five years. I've never had a problem with the truck. I know they go through a lot of diesel there. Tractor should be fine.

Oh yeah, and besides, I am definitely lazy. In fact the only thing I am usually not lazy at is procrastinating and justifying my inaction.

Anyone use the Mr Funnel to screen out dead mosquitos? I had some get into a jug of diesel and die and I'm wondering if it would be fine enough to get them out. They are pretty small when they are dead.

Mr Funnel screens out water molecules which are really, really small compared to mosquitos. It will do just fine filtering dirt, bugs, hair, etc. According to the Mr Funnel website (www.mrfunnel.com) "This durable filter will stop solid contaminants down to the microscopic size of .005 inches."

Go for it.

I'd find another use for that diesel before I filtered it and put it into a $20K tractor. Do you have a fuel oil furnace? If bugs got in, who knows what else is in there.

The Mr. Funnel will do just fine getting those and any other trash out of your fuel. When I clean my fuel filter, which is fairly often, I rarely ever find ANYTHING in it due to my constant use of the Mr. Funnel. I know I don't need to check that often but sometimes there's a small amount of water from the metal tank condensation when I forget to fill it up after use. John

I just got a model F8NC and used it for the first time yesterday. Due to the way the filter is mounted, about 1/2 cup of what appeared to be clean diesel fuel remained at the bottom of the funnel. This is due to the design of the filter which does not allow liquid to pass through at the bottom edge of the filter. What do they expect us to do with the fuel that is left in the funnel? I certainly am not going to dump it out on the ground, and I'm not going to put it into the tank of my tractor because that is where any water etc. would be trapped. I'll be calling the customer support number and I'll post their recommendations.

Looks like I'll be sending my Mr. Funnel back unless there is some way to get this last bit of fuel to pass through the filter that I am missing. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif A poor design if you ask me. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
