I use a braven brv-1 portable bluetooth speaker its waterproof and shock proof I bungee or zip tie it to the rops I can hear it over the tractor fine
I have a ipod shuffle that someone gave me at one point and it mounts to the top of my earmuffs. I then have a pair of speakers (from a pair of headphones) stuck into the inside of the earmuffs and off I go. I can reach the ipod any time and almost never have to fumble around trying to change tracks.i have played from a mp3 player in my pocket to headphones. in some cases i use the small earbuds that fit the ear good.. then put a pair of shooting muffs with deep and soft full ear covering pads on.
This is not helpful to the main point of the thread, but I think it's worth saying.
I wear ear protection, either muffs for most jobs or foam plugs AND muffs while bushhogging. I don't need or want music for a couple of reasons:
1. I want to be able to hear my machine working. Often the first clue that something isn't right is a sound.
2. I don't want the distraction. It's easy enough to get complacent and do something stupid even when paying attention to the job at hand.
And don't even get me started on the phone thing. I HATE TELEPHONES. Between the Navy and various jobs in maintenance, I was shackled to a phone 24/7 for most of 40 years. If I NEVER speak on a telephone again, it'll be a day too soon. One of the main benefits of being out on the tractor is the chance to get away from it all.
JMHO, YMMV.
Get a proper tractor, work it properly, keep the phone in your back pocket under your butt. You will never hear it or feel it vibrate (proper tractor working properly will drown out both the vibrator and the ringer), but it is there if needed.
As far as tunes, I listen to the wonderful character of the Perkins style sounds that echoes from under my hood.
