Folks -

This is my first year to do the checkup on the MX6 and I'm wondering how I should go about safely elevating the unit so I can check the blades, etc., under there. The manual shows putting it on Jackstands, but I don't think I'll be doing it that way....

Any thoughts and best practices to share?

Thanks!

I would raise it with the 3PH, and put three or four jackstands under there to hold it up.
What's your issue with jackstands?

My concern is that I didn't think they would be high enough for me to climb underneath and work.. is that not true?

I use jackstands to work under my car and truck all the time, Not sure why the MX6 would be any different.

You need the bigger jackstands. JC

Ok. I'll give it a try and see how things work out. Thanks.

I use a 48 inch mechanical farm jack. The mower is still held by the 3 point hitch but you can raise it a little higher in the back for better clearence. If you still have safety concerns you can put blocks on the sides of the mower frame should there be an unlikely event where the 3 point hitch and jack fail at the same time.

The nuts that secure the blades on my MX5 come off from the top, through an access hole on the right side of the deck. I suspect that yours do, too.

It's still a good idea to get under there and check for problems.

I plan to. I chewed up some stuff last year and want to make sure that everything looks good for the spring. ;)

Hi Bob: When I need to inspect my MX5 blades I back up so that the mower is overhanging a bank. When I changed the blades and main seal I unhooked the mower from the tractor and stood it up on the 3PH brackets and chained it to the FEL. When you change the blades you will need a 3/4" torque wrench. The torque spec on the blade bolts is 728 ft lbs:eek: My 1/2" impact wrench (600 ft lbs) would not break loose the nut. I had to use a 3/4" breaker bar with a cheater bar. I now have a 3/4" impact wrench for the next blade change. If you don't have a 3/4" torque wrench you should take it to the dealer to get the torque checked or just have them change the blades for you.
Good Luck, Marshall

Thanks. I've got hydraulic wrenches that I think should work so I can get the blades off - the idea of tipping it like that makes good sense. I will be testing out these possible approaches soon - my biggest interest was seeing what others were doing (safely) to get in there and change things out.

On my MX6 I'll run the 3 PT up as high as she'll go and place two jack stands, one on each side of the mower and go under on a creeper. The 3PT holds her up ,the jack stands are just for safety.

I use a 1/2 IR impact 600lbs to take off and put on the blades never have had a problem. I put a dab of grease on the threads of the blade bolts and the collar of the bolt the blade rides on and have never egg shaped the holes. I have over 2500 hrs on a Rhino Twister TW72 and over 1500 hrs on my MX6 and both are still running the original blade bolts and nuts. I replace or sharpen the blades about x3 times a year on both mowers.
