Looks great Bill !!! New grapple and a new welder....I dont think I like you anymore /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Thanks for posting the pics, its always great to see how people get these projects together. Maybe you can use the first set of arms on your lil tractor.
I'll bring my welding helmet into the house to view the completed pictures /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A most excellent project!!!! You are very gifted!!! There are many on this forum that are well versed in painting. Maybe you could indundge us, instead, with some pix of some action shots of your grapple. I have to admit that I have a keen interest in your project. I have wanted a grapple since I got my BX. After building my 50cent backhoe thumb and hauling logs and rocks that pull Baby's front end off the ground, with a full bucket, I am anxious to SEE what can really be done with your grapple ... painted or not. Make no mistake ... I am only interested in what more I can produce with a grapple such as yours over what I can do now.
Thank you for your consideration.
Cheers!

Kubotabilly, great progress! Looks great!

I hope you don't mind if I interrupt you with some questions. Your project has been a great model for some of my design ideas.

It looks to me like your rear cyl support is quite high. If you clamp that log are you worried about bending your mount? Of course you may not be done beefing that area up. I could not find your tractor's hydraulic relief valve pressure, so I used 2350 psi. This will give you about 7,500 lbs of force on this moment. This looks like it could be an 18" or greater moment.

If you are interested, I computed some placement values. Because I don't have your dimensions I guessed. So if you are interested in considering them, you can first check and see how close I got.

Assumptions:
Cylinder, 2 bore, 8 stroke, 26.25" retracted, 34.25 extended

I can't tell how long your grapple arms are, but if the length (in the picture below) from C - D can be 30.25" (and my cyl dimensions are correct, my placement values should also work. My numbers will open the grapple full vertical and substainally shorten the grapple rotation moments making it less likely to bend under load.

My placement numbers (pin centers):
B - C = 3.75"
A - B = 4.25"
C - D = 30.25"

Please understand that I am not a professional /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif so don't over commit on these values. They look pretty good to me.

You have your cyl rod mount slanted back. For these values to work on a cylinder that long, that mount would have to be move out probably close to the bend to get the C-D distance of 30.25".

If my dimensions were wrong, but close, and you want new ones, let me know. I would be glad to help if I can.

Other values that may or may not be interesting.
Cylinder push force (based on 2350 psi) = 7,383 lbs
Cylinder pull force = 5,047 lbs
Cyl extension speed (open to close) = .4 seconds (full throttle and valve)
Cyl retract speed (Close to open) = .3 seconds
I think that definitely calls for a restrictor.

I can't tell you the speed yet with a 1/32" hole at 2350 psi.

The cylinder will consume .43 quarts of hydraulic fluid closed (max, does not consider hose volume).

I hope this doesn't cause another night of tossing and turning.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Very nice! The new arms are exactly where they should be IMHO. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Bill now that your rear cylinder mount is in place how much clearance do you still have on rollback of the bucket?

Your project shaped up real fast and looks great. I'll be you can hardly wait to get out there and start picking up the big stuff.

Don't forget the counterweight on the back. I found that things can get pretty tipsy without some extra weight on the back side of your tractor.

( ... All I can say is keep looking at all those grapple pictures and keep looking at posts on this website and with a little bit of help from above your grapple will work the way you want it to /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

PS> I have enough grapple photos that I can heat my house for 1/2 of next winter /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bill )

LOL! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I could probably heat my house for a week or two then!

Very nice design & welding work - that Miller 250 must be a dream to use!

Your cylinder mounting woes / solution has helped me kickstart my design - so as not to "hijack" this thread - I'll post my ideas in WhiteRocks' thread - since he also seems in "mid-design"! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Can't wait to see your completed, painted grapple - I really want to see it "in action"!

HomeBrew2,
I'll have some action shots this weekend, be patient, all good things take time. I gotta let the paint dry first /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Remember, I'm the guy that you think doesn't use his chrome exhausted tractor for nothing but a showpiece. You don't think that I'm going to get my new grapple dirty just for a few pictures, do you???

Jim,
Thanks for the encouragement. What do you think of my homemade toothbar???

PR,
I have about 5" of clearance as it is right now. Looks like I'm in pretty good shape with my mount. Thanks for the tip on the counterweight. I know I needed some counterweight but I'm not quite sure how much /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif. The neighbor (the JD nut) told me "just make sure your wallet is in your back pocket and that for sure will be enough counterweight" /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
