My New Machine???

Craigslist is excellent for a lot of stuff... but I haven't seen any real bargains on tractors, backhoes or skidsteers lately. No real ones anyway (always plenty of fakes). Seems like everyone is asking top dollar often for some very worn out stuff.

The key to getting the deals on Craigslist is to happen across them within the first hour that they were posted. There is plenty of luck involved, as it appears there are people who make a job out of buying deals and re-selling. Craigslist has been pretty good to me, as i've bought my truck, dump trailer (2200 .. near new condition) , a Honda EU2000i generator (400, plus they gave me a $200 device to couple two 2000i s together .. new condition) , and my Woods BH6000 (2800... only used once). I have certainly missed 100 decent deals for every one i've ended up with though.

What are you on the hook for? Skidsteers?

Scott

Not on the hook for anything right now. :) But yes, I admit it: They were both skidsteers. I am still torn between three paths in regard to this silly little business of mine since I cannot continue indefinitely as-is: a) Invest in a second machine that will help me compete right now, or b) Invest in a machine that will help only marginally right now, but get me into NH mode much quicker, or c) Pull back into a sort of temporary financial survival mode and find a full or part-time job. I know I seem like I'm all over the place sometimes, but as I approach a sort of financial "tipping point" next month, I am searching hard for the best path to take.

In regard to Craigslist, my impression is that folks tend to do better with smaller, less expensive stuff. That seems to be where the bargains are. I am set-up with RSS feeds for Craigslist and eBay, so I know when something is out there instantly. No need to search. Still, the bargains simply aren't out there in the kinds of stuff I am looking for. It's really quite discouraging since there is no way I can simply walk into a dealership and order something brand new. With no ability to finance, it's the auction or "private party" used market all the way.

Hey, I LOVE texas too !! Never been there, but i hear they have an electric chair or two...... AND USE THEM !!! God bless America !!

As far as Maine taxes go.... i know about the whole sales and income tax thing (and disagree with it all), but i'm going to tell you..... my brother lives in northern Maine on ten acres of (300' frontage) LAKEFRONT property. His house is legitimately worth 350K or so , and last years property tax was $700 !!!!!!! Not THOUSAND..... HUNDRED !! Why am i looking at land in Maine?? I realize i can't live there full time till Whats-Her-Name has enough time in for her pension (since i have none)..... but at least i can have a three season camp or sumthin in the meantime. OK.... so my brother DOES have to bring his own trash to the dump.......

Ductape, now would you please stop telling people from away about Northern Maine. Before you know it they will all be up there buying up everything they can get their mitts on, and before you know it we will be signing petitions to give the rest of the state back to MA.

I don't have a problem with you or a couple of folks like ya Dougster. My problem is when everyone gets the idea to move up here. Just take a look at Wayne ME. Winter population 350. Summer population 3350. Out of the 3000 more in the summer 2900 of them are from NJ.

Hey have you seen this threadhttp://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/106630-snow-plow-attachment-kubota-b7510.html#post1211986

Now come on Dave... you know those are just relics from a time somewhere in the past when I actually had an income and even a few dollars leftover in my pocket after taxes. Now they are just large paperweights taking up valuable space in my garage. When you can't afford insurance, excise tax & fuel... all they do is sit there and take up space.

In a sense, they make me feel even poorer than I probably am.

Hey Dougster,
I got room on my trailer for the Vette and Harley. Want me to come up and relieve you of all that garage space so you can park that second tractor? :D Does the Vette have a trailer hitch to trailer the Harley back to Texas? That way I could fly up. :)
hugs, Brandi

Well, the truth be known, they will probably both need to be sold off early next spring to reduce debt and to clear the garage for a second working machine. Neither has been used in years. It really is sad. They deserve to be driven and enjoyed by someone even if it can't be me. Right now, I view them as mere invesments that will have to be turned into cash so that I can survive my second laid-off/semi-retired year.

You may have to wait until you move to New Hampshire to sell them, otherwise the bulk of the proceeds will go to Taxachusetts to spend as the liberals see fit.

Personal finances and seasonal issues will most likely dictate when they are to be sold... but yes, it would be nice to deny our corrupt new socialist governor a few dollars worth of sales tax money. :D

Corvette AND a Harley??? And i thought with you being dirt poor and all, your 'Vette would be a Chevette (anyone remember those??) ! Dougster.... me thinks you aren't so dirt poor afterall !

P.S. You will have a socialist governor when you move up here too !! Oh.... if only just one or two of former governor Craig Benson's appointees hadn't been involved in some taxpayer funded scandal !!! Just one !!! And maybe we would still have a governor who was interested in smaller government (maybe!).

I certainly do remember the Chevette! Heck, I am old enough to remember driving around in a Nash Metropolitan (the *original* sub-compact car)!!! :D

Ductster... don't let these people try to fool you. Yes, there are a few odd toys left over in the garage from the days when I was a fully-employed engineer. But then I made the mistake of turning 55. Those days are long gone now and soon the unnecessary toys will be gone too. Ya can't eat a Vette or a Harley. Let's just hope I can get something for them when I sell as neither has been used in many years. Who knows at this point if they even run anymore?
