Your popping could be coming from the points, have you checked them and the gap?

wherever you read about the oil bath air filter causing the miss.
STOP reading there. it's BAD info.

all running the oil bath dry does is let unfiltered air into theengine.

popcorn sound could be burnt valves, lean.. or too tight of valves.

problems pulling a 4' hog? it should pull a 5 with no issues...

f points and valves are set correctly.. but a valve is sticking.. run some atf-f into the gas and oil for a bit..

I took a few minutes tonight and pulled the dist off. There was debris inside the cap, dust and a small amount of tiny grass particles. There was no gasket on the cap. Pulled the bug and the dust cover and it looked as if someone had changed points within the last year possibly. The condensor was also pretty shiny and free of buildup you would expect had it been there a long time.

First thing I did was look at the point, I checked the air gap it was at .012 and appeared to be okay maybe a little burnt but not glaringly defective. The dist shaft bushings are tight.

I set the thing on my workbench and will install the points and condensor tomorrow and check and set the timing and reinstall with my new gaskets and report back tomorrow.

I am aware the gap should be .015 just to clarify that. I just don't think the 3 thousandths off is my power loss problem.

that's 20% of your gap. too close of gap WILL lead to arcing and power loss.

not saying that was it mind you.. but set static timing and reset the points.

That's good news to me soundguy on the gap I had no idea it made that big a difference. I will admit when it comes to point type ignitions I am not very knowledgable about them.

Thanks for the info now I have some hope at least.

Everything went great until I went to set the timing. I checked before I changed it and the points were fully open 1/4 inch from the outer edge of the bolt hole using the wide side and straight edge and just beginning to close.

I was not able to get enough adjustment up or down to set them the way my manual says to.

I did the process exactly as I read it and it is illustrated. I must be doing something wrong. Gonna let it set for a bit and think about it.

Wait! You said set timing then points, I am doing it in the wrong order right?

I am points illiterate.

Well took a stab at it and advanced the cam plate as far as it would go down. The brought it very close but farther away than the 1/4 inch spec.

Put it back together, cleaned and filled the oil bath, greased everything check dipsticks, held my breath turned the key and it fired right up and ran better than it ever has.

Hogged for a couple hours and no problems at all.

Evidently the timing was the culprit, i should have known when the engine would kick the starter back when trying to start it at times.

Now the engine does not kick back when starting it and it sounds great, revs higher stays there when in heavy grass.

May buy a new dizzy that I can set to spec, it worries me a bit that I can't set it according to the specs. Anyone ever heard of this happening?

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I'm sure I will be back with something new to ask about.
