hyds and pto will be easy. if you are rebuilding the pump too.. give yourself aboput 8hrs for full pto and pump and top cover work.

I seem to have a new issue. Yes it is hot but after brush hogging for 20 minutes my tractor starts losing rpm's and power. I checked the plugs all are burning clean with a slight rustish brown look to them. I grabbed the fo4 manual and adjusted the carb to run a hair richer by half turn of the main big jet. No change. Did this by trial and error on the jet in the field turning out counter clockwise. When I gave up and parked coolant was puking out of the radiator with the engine off. I felt for a t stat in the upper hose and it is not there. Coolant after puking out is just above the fins and holding.

Is it the 105 heat I'm working in? Still a carb issue? Or maybe a coil or points issue? This tractor worked fantastic up until the recent heat wave.

Maybe I just need to park it until it cools off?

you only fill coolant to just cover the coils. any more and it will puke out.

ensure you are not lean.. lean will cause overheat.

check timing... though front mounts have not-so-much timing adjustment

you DO need a thermostat.

make sure you are not getting oil in water or water in the oil.

If it helps, I had the puking rad problem with my 8N. I flushed the rad and as SG said, only filled to the top of the coils. This solved the issue. These tractors usually run pretty cool normally. I noticed previously you said the generator was on the fritz, could the battery be losing charge causing weaker spark and power loss? Am I assuming correctly you are still running the 6v system? I had a 2N and was halfway thru restoring it when a fellow had to have it and offered me more money that I would have invested in it after completing the work. The front mount dist was a pain to get to, ended up pulling the hood.

front dizzy comes off with 2 bolts so you can work on it at your bench with ease.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I am running 6 volt with no plans to change it. Generator is fried and I charge the battery after every couple of uses. I can tell when the battery gets low it tends to cause a pop or backfire. I had just charged the batter overnight before running it and having the low power problems.

I am 1 and 3/4 out on the main jet from a soft seated position. Maybe I need to go further out.

Great tip on the coolant fill level and I will buy a tstat.

I am going to focus on the fuel and rule that out before tearing into the distributor.

Sometimes trial and error is the only solution. That being said, be sure to search this site and stay in touch with members such as Soundguy for answers. He has helped me work through gremlins on my 8N on several occasions.

No oil in the water or vice versa sound guy. I did have some success running the tractor richer but something is still not right. Tractor just does not like this 4' foot brush hog. Finish mower is more to its liking.

Here is what I did tonight I ran the piss out of it stopping occasionally to increase the main jet mixture By turning ctrclockwise. Got it to rich and it started smoking as you would expect a engine to do that has more fuel than it can burn.

Gave up headed to the shop put the battery charger on and set idle to 400 ish rpm's and adjusted the idle circuit to the fo4 specs and directions, once I got that dialed in I tackled the main jet at full governed speed and end up finding there is at least a full turn and a half turn of the screw in between where it loses power and gains power plus rpm's. I set it in the middle of all that and left it.

Here is what is tough to put into words, when my tractor is running it seems to me that it always has a pop to the exhaust like it misses a beat everynow and then. The frequency of this miss or pop increases with rpm. I think it should run smoother than that but I have nothing to compare it to as in how it should sound when running on all 4.

I vaguely remember the sound our old farmall h made when running silage trailers back and forth from the harvest stores to the field, and to me the engine ran smooth as a sewing machine. This ford does not run smooth compared to it the farmall. Everything else we had was diesel and other than driving them sadly I am not that much of a mechanic.

If it cooler this weekend I am going to compression test the cylinders so I can better post here what kind of shape the old girl is in.

Very frustrated tonight.

Oh also I noticed the since the radiator is still overfilled some coolant is getting on the distributor and coil that could be the problem if those are not watertight I suppose. If coolant is getting into the distributor when it gets hot/warm that could be my issue but still don't explain the constant miss I think should not be there.

Another side note I read somewhere an incorrect oil bath air filter level could cause the miss or
Put put sound. I am ashamed that after reading that tonight I went and checked it and there is less than a 1/4 inch of oil in the bottom cup. I kept meaning to check that.... I am out of oil so will grab some at work tomorrow and see if filling it changes anything. Obviously it won't hurt and is required. I am still learning you can't just fuel these up and go.
