What's that differential with the brakes on it out of?
-> a '96-'05 Rav4. Note that it is mounted upside down to get the drive sprockets to turn the proper direction. The rotors and brakes fit a Mitsubishi Lancer.

I saw it in the earlier pictures. What was involved to get the disks right up against it? That originally was shafts bolted on there out to the wheels, correct? Did you just remove them and slip the disks on? Very interesting. I like the location of those brakes. Makes for a lot of possibilities. Thanks again.

The discs are reversed and new holes were added so they would slip over the diff hub bolts. I looked around for a while before I found discs I liked. My needs were basically 10" OD max and the ID needed to be large enough to allow the axle flange to fit inside and bolt up to the diff flange.

Do you have pics of fabbing that (extremely) narrow differenial?

Nice. Thanks.

-> Not sure what you mean. I just built a mounting cage around the stock Rav4 diff.

You will need to plug your diff vent and drill a new one on the top side of the housing.

I suspect that airbiscut didn't catch that it was an IRS differential and thought that you narrowed the axle out of a solid axle vehicle.

You suspected correctly! Did you then have to fab an adapter to connect the differential output to the brake discs? What kind of coupler will you use for your axle, and will that go through a bearing mounted to the tub? Finally, do you roam an auto salvage yard to find just what you need?

I just drilled new holes in the discs to fit the differential flange bolt pattern. I will use the OEM Rav4 axles (which will need to be shortened) as well as the OEM wheel hubs. The drive sprockets (shown in an earlier photo but w/o the teeth) will bolt up to the hubs. I did research on the internet to find what I needed. I have not been to the junkyard yet, but plan to soon to see if I can find more compact calipers for the service brake - these will also be added on the back side of the rotors.
