My War on Poison Ivy

I have a similar war on my property didn't think it was down here in South Florida, now that we know what it is we see everywhere. My wife and I started to get an unknown rash shortly after we pruchased our 2nd property and began fencing it. A friend of mine suggested using a hair drier on the high setting to dry it out and help to controll the itch. I do this till I cant take the heat any longer (being careful not to burn myself). It seems to help me for a few hours of itch relief and it almost feels liek it is being itched by the air. This does not work for my wife she found an ice cube works to cool down the itch. I have also found a steaming hot water on the itch as long as i can stand it helps.

Swiming in a chlorinated pool dries it up fast! Some people suggest using chlorinated bleach but I know the pool water works.

Poison ivy is a member of the same family as the cashew nut. They make non asbsetos brake linings w/ Cashew Nut Resin as a binder. We sent a driver to pick up a loaded tanker and did not know he was allergic to poison ivy. Just the fumes in the plant from them steam heating the load knocked him to the ground and he was hospitalized.

The 'juce' on a scythe blade used to get the back of my left wrist as I'd stand it up and hold the back of the blade while I used my right hand to sharpen the blade. Just past the end of my glove near my watch band. It's the oil that gets you.

Long sleeves and gloves - even in summertime. Folks say "aren't you hot?". My response? "Yes". Lots of soap. Prevent it from getting you in the first place!

Kenmac and irwin, I sure hope I can win this battle like you did. I'm sure it'll take alot of perseverence and effort, but I'm going to give er a shot.

Yeah, Wis Bang I found that out the hard way. The stuff don't flow as freely though.

LOL FHY, I'm starting to think if it weren't for briars, multifloral roses, thornapples, and poison ivy I would have 33 acres of grass:rolleyes:

The fastest way that I found to kill it in the tree like your's ,is to cut the vine at the base of the tree with axe.. Cut it's food /water supply it dies

Man, that's absolutely horrible. Must've been a pleasant couple of weeks. I've got no pictures of mine, but right now I'm thinking it was nothing compared to that.

I thought about that, but I don't want it growing back. I'm hoping to kill the whole plant, roots and all. If it works it should only take me 20 years or so to kill all of it.
Best time to spot it is the fall, the woods look they're on fire with the red leaves everywhere.

Technu has worked pretty well for me.

The other thing to try is the mechanic's GoJo hand cleaner, the gritty kind with pumice. I keep a container in the shower and use it over my entire body after I work outside. A lot less costly than the Technu, but if it will take oil & grease off a mechanic's hands, it will take poison oak oil off your body.

Third tip: disposable rubber gloves. I always have some with me, and when I have to wizz in the woods, the rubber gloves go on first. No more rash on my hoo-hoo.

FWIW, those pictures aren't of my irritated forearms... I found em on Yahoo .. made me cringe so I shared em with ya

Kids can get it bad, I still remember, almost 50 years ago covered in poison ivy head to feet, around the eyes, inside elbows, between fingers and toes, etc.

(this guy looks almost happy showing off that horrible rash)
