I went out today to look for young plants to spray in the area close to the house, and made an interesting discovery.

I had been very late spraying for poison oak last year, late July & August, and used only roundup. The plants had their leaves turn brown and wither, but they were certainly still present, even though they had clearly been poisoned.

This year there are no young shoots to be found. Looks like spraying with
roundup in midsummer might kill them off for the next year.

I have the same battle going on with both Poison Oak and Poison Ivy - Stalks at least as big as yours running to the tops of my trees. I cut out a section of the stalk at the base of the tree with a chain saw, and then treat the bottom section with proper mixture of herbicide - I use Remedy. I would NOT recommend using a chain saw if you are allergic to PI, unless you are fully covered -

Multiple sprayings have been effective on controlling the PO. The best time to spray is in the fall. I would not spray poison ivy if it is higher than your reach, due to drift of the herbicide potentially killing the good stuff too. The cut stump treatment seems to be most effective on larger vines

I also have the green briar battle going on too - changed the mix ratio I was using on it and sprayed them last October - for the second time. I will know the results of that treatment a little later on, but so far it appears the treatment has been very effective as stalks are black.

I don't really understand why, but poison ivy does not seem to bother me, but poison oak does.

I would recommend going to the thrift store to buy cheap clothes, and cheap boots. Burn these after heavy work with PI of PO, and that way you do not have to worry about contaminating anything inside your home with the oils

I guess I am not too worried about the briars. This land was logged about 20 years ago, I think that's when this stuff took hold. As the trees get bigger they will block out enough sun to kill alot of the briars and multifloral roses, I can see that going on already. This darn ivy is smart to climb to the tree tops to get the sun it needs.

two bit and polo- careful what you ask for, I am currently unemployed and will do odd jobs as needed. I would need to charge for travel expenses and labor. I see you guys are from ohio and texas and who knows where else others might want my services. I am from NYS so travel is a concern, but will travel for work if it pays enough. How much is the relief of misery from poison ivy worth to you guys ?;)

see, my south side is THICK with briars......it was timbered pretty heavily about 1985......then, the neighbors east of me clear cut their's....now the sun just rolls in the forest floor......the briars are extrememly thick.......

on my north side, it is mainly mature oaks that are 24"+ at the base...they have a thick canopy......the briars are still beginning to take over.......i want to be able to walk in the woods, not wrestle through briars....

Technu has worked pretty well for me.

The other thing to try is the mechanic's GoJo hand cleaner, the gritty kind with pumice. I keep a container in the shower and use it over my entire body after I work outside. A lot less costly than the Technu, but if it will take oil & grease off a mechanic's hands, it will take poison oak oil off your body.

Third tip: disposable rubber gloves. I always have some with me, and when I have to wizz in the woods, the rubber gloves go on first. No more rash on my hoo-hoo.

My neighbor brings home small bottles of Ivy Dry to put in the glove box as emergency waterless hand cleaner cause it cuts oil & grease so well....

Well it sounds like you hit your signature right on the money, alot of work and so little time to get it done. Those briars are tough stuff, I'm glad mine aren't as persistent. Atleast the pain from briars doesn't last as long as the poison ivy rash.:D I know what you mean though, I've done my share of wading through them and its no fun.

Speaking of your land, I haven't seen an update on your thread for a while. Weather's getting nicer, about time to get back to work.;)
