Last weekend I pulled my fathers Ford tractor (I think its a 5500, an old state of New York DOT mowing rig) with 5 ft bush-hog to my aunts house to cut the fields. The tractor I'm assuming is about 6000 lbs, the trailer is about 2000 lbs. Its well within the range of towing in my 2012 Chevy 2500 (6.0L gas, 6 speed auto, 4x4 ECSB).

I took it easy and kept to the speed limit, which clearly ticked people off behind me. A long line (about 6 or 7 cars) built up behind me on a country road, posted at 50 mph, which I maintained. Our route had us climb a long up hill grade with two lanes (one for slower traffic). The bummer about this hill is that it starts at a stop sign, pulling out of a hole at the beginning of the long hill. So there is no momentum working with you.

So as I pulled out, I jumped in the slow lane and made it up to posted speed at a slow rate. Behind me the group of cars that were stuck behind me earlier, began to pass. About the middle of the pack, a white SUV cut in front of me, slammed on the brakes, slowed us down to 15 mph and then took off. He made a 3 point turn up the road a mile later. Must have been upset that I was slowing him down. And then went out of his way, spending more time just to mess with me.

My gut reaction was to gun it and rev the **** out of the truck. But by that time we hit the steepest part of the hill, the truck was in second gear already and was north of 5000 rpm. She was out of breath and not going to catch up anyway. I had to calm down and protect my rig. I think that was the hardest part of the experience.

The point(s) of this story is that:
- The ignorant are often vengeful as well.
- This was the first time I wish the Chevy was a Duramax. The 6.0 just fell on its face as soon as we started losing speed, and while I could have pulled into the fast lane, I didn't have the torque to pass.
- No matter how mad you get, don't let your equipment take the punishment.
- I highly doubt a TBN member would be like the guy in the SUV, but I bet there are many members that could have been in my position. So I thought I'd share my experience.

I know the feeling well.
During the summer months I go to several classic car cruises during the week driving a 1949 Chevy 1 1/2 Ton truck. I stay on rural roads where the speed limit varies from 55 MPH and lower while going thru small towns. The top speed of the truck is between 45-50 with a good tail wind so lines build up behind me in those 55 zones because they all want to drive 60 plus. Most of these Upstate roads have no place to pull over so they usually pass me (crossing a double line) while honking the horn and giving me the one finger salute.
I don't have a problem towing the tractor with my regular truck but most towing is on level roads.
Everyone is always in a hurry, People pass me on the highway doing 75-80 and yet a few miles up the road when I get off at my exit there they are sitting at the red light.

You could use a bumper sticker to tell them how you feel.

If you got a plate number it certainly would have been worth a call to law enforcement. I did that with a reckless driver and later got a call from the sheriff. They thanked me for the call (though failed to make the intercept).

I get that ALL the time, towing or not. But there are a lot of JA's on the road.

There's the Natchez Trace Parkway which is the shortest distance (33 miles of it) between my location and Lowes, Home Depot etc. The speed limit is 50 mph. My BIL and other relatives tell me that they are strict and DON'T go over 59. There are very few passing areas.

I drive either my F350 diesel dually or a '94 Honda Civic Hybrid, neither noted for quick passing capability. So I'll generally set it on about 55 and cruise, a nice drive. Invariably I'll get someone behind me just about touching my license plate for ten miles or more, then they finally pass me and go about 56, just gradually pulling away.

But recently I've found a new type of JA. They speed up to 60 or more in the areas where you can legally pass, then drop down to 45 or less all the rest of the way. I salute them.

I had a similar thing happen back in 2002. I was pulling a 8600# boat and trailer with my 2001 F150. Some dip shat pulled around me then slammed on the brakes. I did a panic stop. I would have killed the guy if I had gotten my hands on him.

The next morning I went to lower the motor on the boat and it was bound against the back of the trailer. Upon further inspection I realized the panic stop broke the 4x3" weeded on bow stop off and the entire boat slid forward. Only thing that keep it out of the bed of my truck was the motor hitting the trailer and stopping it.

Hard to believe someone could be annoyed you're slowing them down, and then have time to brake check you and dick around. I back way off when I see jerks like that, it's just not worth it.

In high school (long ago) on a field trip in three charter buses. Guy pulled a stunt like the SUV in the utube. While he was slowing in front of our bus, the other two passed him, one about 1.1 bus lengths in front of us, the other to his left. Middle bus slowly drifted to our lane, forcing dude into the puckerbrush. A lot of delighted 14 year olds and three happy bus drivers! Don't know how the drivers communicated (1965) but it sure worked.

I had the reverse story about 12-13 years ago. Driving East on a long trip in the summer with family in the Exploder. I forget where we were at the time - Illinois, Indiana, Ohio - somewhere in there. Lots of construction zones, but they were doing the thing where they would crimp it down to one lane for 4-5 miles, then open it up for a couple miles to let things clear up a bit then crimp it back down. Similar to the youtube, i must have offended this trucker somehow. No idea how. We came up to a one-lane zone, and for a moment I thought i could get ahead of this truck so I accelerated for a second and then quickly realized no way so I immediately backed off and tucked in behind him for the slow section coming. I didn't even get up to his bumper before I called it off. When it opened up again, I went to speed up and pass, and this JA in the semi starts to weave/swerve around to push me off the road as I get up even with his trailer. Totally blindsided by this as I did nothing to him and was just driving along. He keeps trying this as I and others try to get past him. No idea what his deal was, but eventually he stopped being a road hazard and I could see him swearing at me as i passed. I went over in my head a number of times how I could have angered this guy and came to the conclusion, that he angered himself, and I just happened to be nearby. I should have called the state police but survival mode kicked in at the time, and we didn't have much for cell phones at the time. I like how the trucker in the video called the state police on the guy and they actually did something about it! "My" guy should not have had a drivers license, and especially not a CDL. There are way too many people who should not be allowed to pilot a vehicle...but yet they do.

I was a passenger in Ford Econoline going from Iowa to Colorado many years ago (I think in 1987). At some point in Nebraska we were passed by some young kids in very nicely maintained/ restored red 1960 Chevy convertible (probably priced father's car). They would pass us and then slow down to 30 miles. We would speed up and pass them. Well they would do the trick again laughing. Once or twice it can be funny but when they did it about fifth time the our driver just "kissed" them demolishing all the tail lights. They stopped laughing and left the interstate at the next exit.

When I am trailering a load who and how many are behind me is not my concern. Totally focused on what is in front of me. Since I generally cruise 3 MPH below posted limits, I almost always have a line of cars behind me and the benifit of no one in front of me.

People react in all different ways to trucks and truck trailer combinations and I feel bad for them that their life is in such utter chaos that they have to drive dangerously.

Zen trucking is the way to go...

I don't know if it's just the sign of the times or people are just getting more rude. Lots of it's because they're too busy texting someone to bother about watching where they're going. I had a car with US Government license plates cut me off a few days ago. The driver probably didn't know where she was or what she did, I saw the phone in her hand and she was texting. I really get tired of people pulling out in front of you and then won't bother to get out of the way.

Don't know what regs are where you are, but out here you are supposed to pull over if you get a stack of 5 cars behind you.

I know I do when I'm towing. I am patient with folks towing, and appreciate those who pull over like I do. Of course, sometimes they have to wait till there is a safe place to pull over...

I think that is only for really slow farm equipment. I think a truck traveling close to the speed limit is fine.

They are out there by the hundreds. If you want a real treat have a job that requires you to work out on the roadways for a living..Just before I retired my journey men lineman that I worked with for 10 plus years was killed by one of these idiots.Be careful out there.

Well if there is a rule about a five car line up I will become a conscientious objector. It is suprisong the number of people who have the orchids to talegate me not enough to pass me.

For some reason those who tailgate me trust my load is secure and that my deck is clean, I do not extend that trust to others especially landscapers
