This is what I did. An extension off of the house... a covered 'entertainment area', if you will. I 'use it' constantly, if only to enjoy a pipe of tobacco whilst contemplating the world & my domain.

We have a very nice front and back porch.

Darn,

There is no convincing my wife to get something practical and easy to erect, or better yet, just forgetting the idea.

Metal gazebo

Seller sent pictures of box with model #s, this is a deal for someone, not me.
This is the model on Amazon.

So it looks like I'll be building a little octagonal wooden Gazebo.

Gazebos suck!!!! Horrible compound angles to work out. I hope you don't have an ole grain bin sitting around like I did.....

This is what my Wife ended up with..............

If you show her the pics I'm off the hook...... :D

That is a brilliant idea. Well, that and building a screened in porch.

A gazebo is just a roof without any walls. Four sides or 8, it's all up to what you want. I think that the reason most are never used for anything is that they are too small. Going with 4 sides instead of 8 makes it easier to go bigger, and have more usable space.

In the picture below, I basically made a 16x16 square, then added the angled bump outs to create 8 sides and make it more decorative. But the square section is what it's all based around.

Well, I just hope anyone that has to keep the wife happy doesn't have to lay 26 courses of block to get up level with the deck like I did....ours has a dungeon and a sub-dungeon....which comes in handy to lock up grand kids on occasion.....ahahahaaa

That's a 16' ladder leaning up against the block, by the way....and not at the lowest point.

Looks like some kinda wood space ship under construction, but the only way I could put the roof on was build a scafold around it to work on it. I put 50 year shingles on it, so the next roofing job is NOT my problem !

Inside and exposed 4x6 rafters are all red cedar, sawed on my woodmizer.

Here is the one I built a few years ago. Can be opened to allow for a breeze, or closed like in the photos to be used as a 3 season room. Just inside the brown vinyl is scree s to keep the bugs out. The bottom half is safety glass with a slight tint. I went with laminated safety glass to protect any kids if they happened to fall into it. Safer than regular and tempered glass, and a liitle cheaper to get than tempered too.

It's like those huge wrap around porches on newer homes. You know the ones with the lights on the outside. You never see a soul on those either.

If I had a wife, which I don't and she asked for a Gazebo, I'd say that was a great idea and at the earliest convenience hand her one of those night school course pamphlets open to the woodworking section.

Well I going up to Canadian border to pick this up as a shelter for alongside my lean to.

I have extra lumber left over from the Solar panel install on the barn roof to reinforce the structure as needed and will tie it all down on concrete piers. The portable shelter we have is falling apart and Some of my implements are outside under snow banks.

I'm going to build a gazebo, no bigger than 10' across, maybe just 8', as all she wants it for is for decoration and a place to get out of the sun tending her garden.
