Neal's Generator/Transfer setup

Re: Neal\'s Generator/Transfer setup

The portable generator is a great idea...that's exactly what we did on the farm for a number of years. Dad would even take the electric chain saw out to trim brush from the fence lines with the generator.
Make sure you keep the tractor and trailer in as straight of a line as possible while you are running the generator, to minimize the stress on the pto shaft. One of the neighbors bent ours during one of the big winter blackouts...it made for a real adventure to get that repaired.

Thanks to all that replied. All advice was good and will be used.
BTW, total ost for this set up should be @$1,910, and I end up with a portable welder and generator. I already have a 16' landscape trailer to move it to other locations.

Re: Neal\'s Generator/Transfer setup

One thing I failed to mention about storage, which I thought to be important.

I was afraid the air vents, both front & rear, had large enough holes that dirt dobbers might be able to get through and I could just see, the first time I went to use it, all air passages would be stopped up, so before I put it in the barn for the first time, I covered the vents with smaller mesh wire.

I also cover the control head with a black plastic trash bag & tuck in around the bottom to keep the receptacles clean.

Yep, Neal, aren't the mud daubers fun in Texas? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Lots of RV generator and air-conditioner problems are caused by mud daubers. And when I didn't drive my old 3/4 ton truck for a couple of weeks, I found that the automatic choke didn't work; raised the hood and found a mud dauber nest on the linkage that was blocking it, more mud dauber nests inside the air filter housing, etc. Your screens are a very good idea.
