253 ac.. that's a good hunk. normally I'd suggest something big.. like for open mowing.. or big logging..doesn't look like you are doing much open mowing. and logs are already thinned.
Seems like you may be in line for a mid size.. say 30-40 hp range.. small enought to get in and out.. you will need to decide if you want to tote 5' or 6' implements ( including mower.. and then size the tractor accordingly ). It's tough buying too small a tractor.. but then again.. it's tough if your tractor won't drive thru the woods!
Are there any future plans for opening it up?
I'm looking in the crystal ball and predicting that you will get lots of suggestions based around a 4wd shuttle or hydro tranny unit, with a fel and 30 to 40 hp.. etc.

Isn't that the truth about 99% of the members here are using something that falls within those specs.
I think it was a good suggestion someone mentioned as to what locals are using. You can get a lead on the local dealers this way also. Personally I could not imagine running those hills with a 60 to 80 HP tractor, logging roads can have some serious ruts and the turns are going to be sharp and steep. I would want something with good visability to the ground, and not a high center of gravity.

Howdy neighbor and fellow newbie. I pass by your place on my trips from Fl to my 30 acres of heaven up near Johnson City. I too have been going round and round about tractors and what would be appropriate for the tasks at hand and planned. Personally I have become enamored with the Kubota line followed by Kioti. I am currently entertaining the M49UD. This is a reasonably priced utility (CUT's are in such demand that it seems the true utility prices are more workable) Unlike you I have about 12 acres of pasture/hay to care for to go with 18 standing timber. This unit is beefy enough to take care of both environments.
BTW.....I would be happy for any feedback here. I've been reading the forums for several months now and have found them be about the best thing since sliced bread. And seeing as you're sharing pics.... Click here for picture 1

Hmmm, the COG is a lot lower than a tractor. If money were no object with the implements, I would have leaned toward something like the ASV.

You travel up the new I-26 extension? My place is just off of the Wolf Laurel exit. My northern property boundary is the TN state line (and the Appalachian Trail).

No, they can't.
They are too narrow and two short ( in length ) to be stable on any serious incline.
As they say on the Gran Prix commercial, wider is better.
Your best bet, imo, is a 4wd cut with the wheels set to their widest track setting.
You may have to go with ag tires/wheels to get that ability some of the tractors I have seen that come with r4 industrial tires aren't adjustable ( r4 tires are on one piece rims, where the ag tires are on split adustable rims,my Kubota ( ag adjustable ) and my FIL's NH ( r4, one piece rim ) are this way ).
I think 30 - 50 hp is plenty, it doesn't look like you will need a huge amount of hp for just some grading and trail maintenance.

I was looking at the kioti also. was looking at the DK45S. Thats the perkins engine model. Tried to find Youngs but they only had a phone# and havn't gotten around to calling them yet. I'm close enough to VA that I thought of going there. they are only 2 more miles away from me than youngs but the drive is easier.
