The good reviews of Fords Eco boost is why we're getting the new Ranger.

ive had two, wife has one in her explorer and have had friends with them, they are great packages.

I worked for for and dodge, I prefer chevy. Got laid off by Ford because they didn't take the bailout.
That's all personal experience and preference.

I would make sure I got:

4x4
4 door
Tow hitch
Factory installed trailer brake controller

All of those will be useful to you and be good for resale

^^^ I'd rather toss all that stuff on a trailer. I get home, I disconnect, leave the stuff on the trailer and pull the car in the garage.

I like your idea as I use my trailers also. The only downfall I see is the rain & snow.

And an electric locking rear diff...

PERSONALLY, I HATE towing anything. It's a load that isn't on your mind, when it's safely in your vehicle.

With that said hands down the best truck Ive liked out of the three is the F150 with the 3.5 ecoboost, nothing better in terms of towing and pure truck performance.

Another vote for the F150 with the Ecoboost. Ordered one just the way I wanted and picked it up in May of 2016. Supercab, 3.5 Ecoboost, 3.55 locker, payload 1940 lbs. Over 37,000 miles on it now and all I've had to do was change the oil and rotate the tires. Zero problems. 21 mpg overall average since I bought the truck - and that's calculated, not what the dash display shows. The way the truck will blow over an 11,000 ft mountain pass just makes me smile! Quiet, strong, and trouble free...that's all I ask for in a truck.

I would suggest getting either the Ford F250 or 350 single rear wheel with the 6.2 gas engine. Real world driving it gets about the same economy (sorta sucks) as the 3.5 ecoboost and is a much simpler motor that should give you 250K miles of life if you keep the oil changed in it. The brakes and frames are heavier, and there is no substitute for a bigger truck if you need it. I have the F350 DRW and pull a 20K trailer with mulch or compost at least once a week and am amazed at how well it does. Had a Ram last time and while the Cummins is a great engine, the plastic bits of the truck were coming apart at 4 years and 90K miles.

Man, the OP asks questions about a 1/2 Ford and Chevy and gets crucified for looking at new and not looking at 3/4 and 1 tons. Talk about a derailed thread. Either trucks you ask about will do fine for general use that isn’t heavy. There’s no need to over buy if you don’t need it. Both brands have their pluses and minuses but overall are good trucks.

Personally I'm not going to argue the F150/250 differences, as when I'm not riding a motorcycle, I've been driving an F350 for the last 22 years. It's a good core workout.

However, about mileage.... fuelly.com could probably help here:
Here's an F250 with the 6.2: Ford F-25 Super Duty MPG - Actual MPG from 348 Ford F-25 Super Duty owners
Here's an F150 with the 3.5: Ford F-15 MPG - Actual MPG from 2,399 Ford F-15 owners

Note that you can't filter for 4x4 on that website, and I certainly wouldn't consider it exact, but it provides a larger crowdsourced data sample that's probably going to be a bit more real-world than a single anecdote.

Yeah lots of backwards information in here. 1/2 tons are solid for 7-9k towing all day long. Diesels are not worth even looking at until you start hauling 10k or more as 1/2 tons are rated for no more than 10-11k, so I dont know where the 20k figure came from. 3/4 ton gasers are junk too unless you have heavy payloads beyond that they arent giving you much more than half tons.

IVe owned all of the big three and all three trucks are good with some good and some bad. I dont buy the bail out crap, all of them have taken money at some point and GM paid most of it back, really a silly assertion there.

With that said hands down the best truck Ive liked out of the three is the F150 with the 3.5 ecoboost, nothing better in terms of towing and pure truck performance.

I regularly haul 15-16k with an F-350 dually, 6.2L gasoline engine. Until you get to close to 20k pounds or tow a lot, the diesel is just bad math.
