Needing rain bad. How bout you?

Central Ohio is very dry and temps expected to be upper 90's for the next several days. Worse, the wind has picked up.
It's mostly crop ground around here so I don't think fire risk is all that great but we're getting to the point where a grass fire in other parts of the state could get out of control real easy. There has been spotty and sufficuent rain to the south of here but you had to be in the right place at the right time.

Our well also used to run dry many years before summer's end, making it necessary for us to shower at the Y and haul water from town out to the farm, so I have a THING about having enough water (rain barrel system, swimming pool, and upcoming pond) and feel very lucky that I live in such a rainy climate.

You add a positive spin to these grey wet days.. 4 years of below average (colder and wetter spring ) weather is starting to wear on me. Sometimes I find myself dreaming about a move south or east (of the Cascades) to escape this weather but then we get one sunny warm day and I quickly forget the last 2 weeks of rain..

Man, it's dry here in western Oregon. Haven't had any rain for at least an hour or two. And at 5:15 in the evening it's a sweltering 58 degrees. Fortunately, most of the day was in the low 50's.

Weatherman said this has been the second driest three month period since they started recording in the late 1800's.

Temps approaching and expected to exceed 100 degrees, along with the high humidity, no rain. Almost enough to make a guy grumpy. However we have had a breeze which makes the heat at least tad bearable.

But, just when we start to feel sorry for ourselves, we are blessed that we haven't had a rash of fires. You have to feel for the folks in Colorado. They have huge stands of dead pine from the pine borer - that's a LOT of fuel for those fires. Mother nature, she is unpredictable that's for sure!

We have not had rain in Jackson, OH since early May. I planted 1/2 acre of corn, and none of it started.:mur:

Hope you're slathering on the sunscreen, lol.

Be of good cheer! Here's what the Old Farmer's Almanac predicts for the end of June and July here -- notice the words "sunny" and "very warm" and "turning hot." It might break 80 degrees yet west of the Cascades!

JUNE 2012: temperature 63.5ー (2ー above avg. north, 5ー above south); precipitation 1.5" (avg.); Jun 1-12: Sunny; cool, then very warm; Jun 13-18: Rain, then sunny, warm; Jun 19-27: Showers, then sunny, turning hot; Jun 28-30: Sprinkles, then sunny, cool.

JULY 2012: temperature 65.5ー (1ー above avg.); precipitation 0.1" (0.4" below avg.); Jul 1-5: Sunny, turning hot; Jul 6-11: Sunny, seasonable; Jul 12-17: Showers, then sunny, warm; Jul 18-27: Showers, then sunny, hot; Jul 28-31: Sunny, cool.

Here in WV where I live it is dry. I watch the water level in the creek and it is at late August level and nearly dry. The grass is dormant and brown looking.

The interesting thing about being really dry in the clay of central Ohio is the amount of moistere trapped below the surface as well as the high water table. It's bone dry here but if I could get a shovel in the ground the soil would be damp just a couple inches down. Go figure. When we lived in the gravel soil of Maine, a three week drought had the soild really dry well below the surface and even big trees looked dry. Not that it matters but the water table here seems to be in the 40' to 80' range. Our well in Maine was well over 300'! Maybe that impacts things?
