Neighbor attacked by Pit Bulls

I wouldn't tolerate a bit bull next to my property. First time owner was gone I would disappear the thing, and never speak of it again.

HS

They'd just get another one. And, if you were caught on a game camera, you could be charged with damage to personal property, the same as if you damaged their truck. Might make it hard to hold the CHL that so many of us like to do.

Why? The OP suffered no damages except possibly some PTSD. He broke no laws.

What legal liability could he have?

Because the dog's owner could say that the OP and neighbor provoked the dogs into attacking after the dogs were shot. As such he could say the OP caused the neighbor's injury. We already know the guy is a nut. He could claim anything.

I'll echo with Good Job Tim. They can have their pits, I'll stick to my early warning friendly springer.

In all fairness although the State Police described the animals as Pit Bulls the owner has claimed that they were a different breed. She claims that one is and Indian Mastiff and and the other a Borden Russel mix (not sure of the spelling). I got this from one of the news casts that interviewed the owner. I guess to a breeder or someone who can identify different breeds with accuracy you could tell they weren't pit bulls. To my untrained eyes and if you look at the picture in post one you would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Mis-identification of Pitts is common.

The prong collar does NOT work by cutting off breathing. It works by pinching small folds of skin. The choke collar, as the name implies, can choke off the airway, and even collapse a trachea, if used improperly.

I too train many of mine, in a prong collar. It is not a bad collar. It is NOT a good collar to have on a potentially dangerous dog, either. A choke collar would be better for that animal, but again, should not be left on, unsupervised. I am active in competitive obedience. Having it on a dog running loose just is an example of how the owner doesn't care about the safety of his dogs, nor anyone else. That was my point about the collar. Owner is an IDIOT!

Sorry but I have to call BS on this comment. This collar is a very aggressive way to control a headstrong dog... Before I used one on my dog I put it on my own neck to see how it worked.
(insert derogative comment here...I'm used to them.)

Call it what you want to. It is also known as a german PINCH collar, as well as a prong collar. Yes, it does give "power steering" to a dog that pulls a lot, but only if used properly. USed improperly, the dog will become desensitized to it, and pull, just like with a choke or a buckle collar.

And, i am finished with this, because it really takes away from the original posting.

Joshua; Good post. I find that even people that have jobs that require them to work with dogs, (i.e., animal control), don't always know when it is or isn't. Fear seems to run rampant.

I was working out in the garage and from the neighbors house comes a blood curdling scream and dogs barking. I know the neighbor does not own a dog so my senses are telling me this is not good. I thought the guy was chasing the dogs but the screams were not that tone of voice. Well I jump on my tractor and rush up the right of way for the power-lines between our houses and he is under his pick up with two pit bulls trying to drag him out from under the truck. When I get there the two dogs turn their attention to me. I carry a .380 to scare the bears if needed but today it saved a life. The two dogs came for me and I shot the lead dog then the other tried to circle around my back and I shot that one as well. All totaled five rounds two dead pit bulls.

Neighbors legs had chunks of flesh missing and he was bitten in the face, both hands, shoulder and both legs pretty bad. Never thought I would use my weapon for any more than target practice or to scare away a bear or coyote.
Here is a picture of dog number 1, that's the neighbors blood all over the dog.

You are hero.

That's why they want them--because they are a threat to people.

I guess I knew that... but I still don't understand it. Most properly raised dogs will naturally protect you if they feel they're part of the "pack". (Except my lab... With the proper incentive- a pat on the head- he'll show you where I buried the gold.;-))

Not much of a write up for such a heroic effort on Tim's part. At least they could have said "see TBN for more details".
The article is also inaccurate. I was outside working when I heard the screams never went inside to retrieve a weapon, I was carrying one.
