I'll also echo the kudos for Timster2 for his fast action in rendering aid. Just out of curiosity, what type of ammo did you have in the gun? I've got a .380 as well, and when I stand a cartridge for it up next to a .357 you can sure see the difference in potential.

For those that wonder why anyone would want a dog like that, I suppose a lot of them are for protection when the owner either can't or won't consider a firearm. I've never had to chase down an escaped firearm (nor have I heard of anyone else having to) before it attacked someone, so I guess guns are inherently safer than dogs.

It seems like bad people gravitate toward pitties, but not only bad people. This is a pretty low incident rate, compared even to lightning strikes and other freak accidents?

The city I live near is in the process of banning all bull terrier mix/pit bull dogs in city limits. There are way too many attacks from them and way too many low life's that feel the need for a big bad dog to intimidate people and make their selves feel big and bad. Probably more because they are hiding something drugs etc. my .002

Interesting. Some local municipalities feel the same way about guns.

Two dogs, together, roaming without human supervision, is a pack hunting. They found prey and attacked in pack mentality to render prey dead. Victim saved by heroic effort of conscientious neighbor, who stood his ground and averted a potentially fatal outcome for the victim and himself.

People who want to own certain breeds of canines ought to have to take a course of rigorous training and obtain a license to own a dog of potentially highly aggressive characteristics. In addition, they should be held completely liable for any attack by the animal on human or other animal, as part of their license to own a lethal weapon.

Personally I came across the breed doing animal rescue work. Felt the same you did before, and after working with some various "bully breeds", have found them to be one of the most loyal, family oriented pet you will find. That said, finding a home for a terrier breed, the requirements of the home increase 10 fold. Most people don't have a clue what can happen to a dog when you chain it 24/7 and don't give it proper supervision and socialization. I will agree that too many people own particular breeds for the wrong reasons.

The collar that was on the dog is evidence the dog was hard to control and the owner was sufficiently aware of it. Bottom line is he harbored a dangerous dog and knew it. If the dog owner has any assets he won't when this is over.
