Neighbor attacked by Pit Bulls

Great job Tim. I have owned two (2) American Staffordshire Bull Terriers and would do so again. The dogs were trained and raised properly from birth. The male was a large powerful dog (85 lbs), female (70 lbs) was a sweet heart. I have learned that most anything can happen with dogs, but 99.9999%it is the way the dogs were raised/trained. So in my opinion it's not the dog, it's the owner.

People who want to own certain breeds of canines ought to have to take a course of rigorous training and obtain a license to own a dog of potentially highly aggressive characteristics. In addition, they should be held completely liable for any attack by the animal on human or other animal, as part of their license to own a lethal weapon.

And the public should be notified when they move into a neighborhood. Repeat offenders (those who just get another aggressive dog when they are forced to put one down) should wear tracking devices and be charged with the dog's offense just as if they did it themselves.

I had an encounter with an aggressive pit and had to pull it off another dog. I turned the owner in only to find out he had been charged previously with a different dog and that dog was put down after attacking someone. These people are not dog lovers, they are dangerous to society.

The original RCA dog is rumored to have been a pit and they were a great breed and still can be. Back then there wasn't this subculture raising unsocialized dogs and training them such that they are aggressive and prone to attack.

Great job Tim !! You saved your neighbors life by being prepared and vigilant by doing the RIGHT Thing ! I think some people, especially in the citys would have turned a deaf ear , and done NOTHING .

Pitbulls have gotten a bad reputation by the same thug mentality , chaining a dog up , abusing them until their mean and treating them as an object that they only pay attention to when The owner feels like it, then are shocked when the dog turns on them or escapes.

Exactly this. Some dogs are just mean, but mostly, the dog's temperament comes from its handling, and the way it reads its owner. There is a feedback loop where a dog gets a rep for being mean, and the mean people buy them and make them mean. It used to be dobermans in the 70's,then rottweilers, now pits. Don't blame the dogs for the owners' faults.
Exactly !
I have a rescue female pit bull , she is very well behaved but I keep a tight reign on her because I dont know how she was treated before. Squirrels, moles, armadillos and turtles dont stand much of a chance but if she EVER acted out toward humans the repercussions for her would be .........well , she would be dealt with.
as a side note , she is part of my pack , she knows her place, and sleeps with my wife ,our other rescue pup and myself in our bed. not that I like that , WOMEN !!!

I was working out in the garage and from the neighbors house comes a blood curdling scream and dogs barking. I know the neighbor does not own a dog so my senses are telling me this is not good. I thought the guy was chasing the dogs but the screams were not that tone of voice. Well I jump on my tractor and rush up the right of way for the power-lines between our houses and he is under his pick up with two pit bulls trying to drag him out from under the truck. When I get there the two dogs turn their attention to me. I carry a .380 to scare the bears if needed but today it saved a life. The two dogs came for me and I shot the lead dog then the other tried to circle around my back and I shot that one as well. All totaled five rounds two dead pit bulls.

Neighbors legs had chunks of flesh missing and he was bitten in the face, both hands, shoulder and both legs pretty bad. Never thought I would use my weapon for any more than target practice or to scare away a bear or coyote.
Here is a picture of dog number 1, that's the neighbors blood all over the dog.

WOW! I'm a dog lover but Pit Bulls scare the he]] outta me. Started carrying a pistol after somebody dumped one along my dog walking route. Next day it had disappeared but got to thinkin' what would I have done if unarmed and attacked by that beast out in the open. The answer was die. Can't out run them or out fight them.

This man in CA was just trying to film police to be sure they did not violate anyone's rights...they killed his dog and arrested him...Sad to watch..The man had put his dog in his car with the window rolled down for air....but the dog saw the cops handcuffing his owner and he got out of the window to protect his owner...

I had a similar situation. I travel by car a lot on my job and always take my heeler along. Of course she has her dog parks she alerts me of when we are in the neighborhood. It always amazes me she can smell the parks sometimes 5 miles away. Anyway, I stop at one once that is about 5 acres and has a muddy entrance so I enter through the small dog entrance and proceed towards a gate between the two sections. Out of the back of the park come two aggressive pits and an owner in panic. Of course I stay in the small section, but notice this owner can't even catch his dogs. He gets more and more panicked and I sense these dogs can jump the fence. I start to move back to the entrance ( double gates close together) and sure enough one dog jumps into the section I am in. I get in between the two small gates and finally the owner gets ahold of his dogs and takes off on foot with them. Close call but why anyone would own dogs like that, I have no idea.

What Beltman said.

Interesting. Some local municipalities feel the same way about guns.

True but a background check is necessary to legally buy a gun from a dealer it could be and arguably should be the same for dog owners give it time. Most municipality have leash laws in place now that apparently isn't working.. I guarantee I will vote yes on background checks for certain breeds of dog if I get the chance. my .002

Note, those were fatal attacks

Nice shooting, Tim! Thanks for stepping up. You and your .380 did fine.

Re: "pit bulls led these attacks accounting for 71% (22)", that is 22 attacks out of 300 million inhabitants.

It seems like bad people gravitate toward pitties, but not only bad people. This is a pretty low incident rate, compared even to lightning strikes and other freak accidents?

You have as many idiots who own guns as you do dogs. Yeah, the dangerous dogs may bite you, but then you also have the idiots who get a dog, never have it altered, then let it roam wherever it wants to go, loses it (the dog) only to get another. Just keeps repeating the process over and over. Heck, I wouldn't have a problem with background checks on ALL dogs LOL

Foolish, IMO just opening the door for legal problems. There are plenty of other breeds available that aren't capable of killing people.
