Good for you, man!

"Oh, my sweet little pit bull would never hurt anyone!" Or, "She is a loving dog, I can't believe she could have killed that little boy!" We hear it all the time. People get a dog bred for fighting and can't understand that a fighting dog would attack.

Many insurance companies either won't cover you or will charge a higher premium for liability if you own one of several breeds they believe are dangerous.

We've been watching the various animal shelters for a golden retriever. Every time we look, about 20% of the dogs are pit bulls. At least some pit bull owners figure it out. But management at the shelters haven't gotten it--they try real hard to place pit bulls in homes rather than kill them. Some day they will get it when one of their folks gets attacked.

Many years ago there was an article about 2 guys hunting birds, got charged by a bear. Both had pistols just in case. One had a .38 & the other a 9mm. Typical story, the bear died at their feet. Hit many times by both guns, only the .38 penetrated enough to have killed the bear. .380? Looks like it's good for pit bulls, but it might just make a bear mad.
Its not the breed, its the owners... Remember Vick?

Why? The OP suffered no damages except possibly some PTSD. He broke no laws.

What legal liability could he have?
Because the owner is obviously an idiot that will now do anything to save his butt and try to make a few bucks.. Watch..

Had two big dogs circling my pond the other day trying to figure out how to get to my ducks. I've never seen them before and I ran down toward the pond to run them off and succeeded after a couple tries. As I was walking back up the house I was thinking, "that was really dumb". I should have gone in the house and grabbed a gun first. If they would have attacked me, it would have been bad. After reading this thread, I think I'll start carrying more often just in case.

I have been in the ER or at the scene of a dog attack and heard this three times (my dog has never done that before). The fourth time I heard it was when my Nephew was attacked by a German Shepard as my Nephew walked through a friends front door. The dog went by the dogs owner, my brother and attacked my Nephew. Neither had been to that house before. Over a hundred stitches in his scalp.

Too many wingnuts own pits. Put rotties or gsd's in their possession and there would be a lot more incidents of rotties or gsd's attacking and/or killing people.

Exactly this. Some dogs are just mean, but mostly, the dog's temperament comes from its handling, and the way it reads its owner. There is a feedback loop where a dog gets a rep for being mean, and the mean people buy them and make them mean. It used to be dobermans in the 70's,then rottweilers, now pits. Don't blame the dogs for the owners' faults.

You just named the three worst breeds for pets. They may make a good working dog. They may be OK as pets in a knowledgeable dog handlers environment but for the typical unskilled dog owner stay away. I have great perinease/ lab fix, he can be a hand full at times. Jmho

Just got back from the Hospital neighbor is doing ok but is in bad shape. Going to need plastic surgery to close the hole in his leg. Both legs are bandaged and both arms are bandaged from his hands to his shoulder. His face has been sewn back together and is still quite swollen.

Got his side of the story, or if you will, the beginning. Seems he had seen the dogs walking down his driveway and stayed in his truck that he had just moved from his garage. The dogs disappeared and he thought they had gone into the woods. He opened his door and the two dogs came from the back of the truck and attacked. One jumped to his face as the other took a shot at his legs. At this point he knew I was out in my yard, he had heard my tractor running, and started screaming. He could not get back in the car as they had him blocked. They backed off for a moment and he ran to the back of the truck. He was making his way along side the truck going to make a break for the side door of his house when they hit him again. One high the other low and knocked him down to the ground. One went for his head as the other was attacking his legs. He grabbed the drive shaft of the truck and pulled himself under but the dogs grabbed him and puled him out. He grabbed the one that was at his face by the collar and was punching it with all he had but it just kept coming. The other was dragging him out from under the truck again. It was about this time in the battle that I showed up.

With the battle going on he doesn't remember hearing me shoot only that the dogs stopped attacking him. He was far enough under the car that the rear wheel was now protecting his face and throat so he did not see much of what I was doing he only knew that I was there with the tractor running.

The adrenaline has finally stopped running through my veins and hopefully I will get a good nights sleep tonight. What a day!

What a story Timster. I feel so bad for your elderly neighbor. Beyond the physical aspects, he'll be scarred for the rest of his life. He did not deserve that. And neither did you. God Bless you Tim and God give you peace in dealing with this.

To the Pit Bull supporters. Read Tim's last post over a couple times and then tell me it's not the dog breed, it's the lousy owners that caused this. Very few dog breeds could ever be taught to randomly and skillfully attack like that. That comes natural to them. Explain to me the processes an owner would have to go thru to teach his Pit Bulls to do that. Please don't blow me off. Explain that to me in logical detail. How do you teach a pair of dogs to do that??? Can you teach my two Border Collies to do that???
