Here in Ohio, the law (and law enforcement) would have totally supported your actions. The only comment you would have gotten from a cop was "well done."

That's what I have gotten her in PA. :D:D:D

Me: Took a few days for the body to loose the effects of adrenalin and get a good nites sleep. Still on my mind, guess it will take time to get over the incident. ...

Critical incidents like this can echo through your head for days and weeks. The echo can be quite constant right after the event but it should diminish over time. Getting good sleep is VERY important.

Most people do not get PTSD but you should still be aware of the symptoms. I would suspect your neighbor might end up with PTSD. It would be good to read these links to be aware for your own sake, but also for your neighbors sake. You might be the only one he will talk too about how he is doing mentally after the incident.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Symptoms, Treatment and Self-Help

I read the first edition of this book many years ago, CopShock, Second Edition: Surviving Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Allen R. Kates: 9780966850123: Amazon.com: Books, and it was very interesting. I might have others, but this is the one that I remembered, so it must be the best.:laughing::laughing:

I have known a few people who have been in shootings. Two of them were greatly affected by the incidents and certainly had PTSD. One guy was a newlywed and the shooting cost him his marriage, a close friend, and his job, but thankfully, not his career. There was no problem at all with the legality of the shooting, his problems were all from his ability to handle shooting another person. The other guy I did not know as well but the word hypervigilant applied ten fold. I know for sure the one guy had PTSD, and if they other guy did not have PTSD, I would eat my TBN hat.

The neighbor almost certainly has a lawyer by now and the lawyer is/should be telling the neighbors to keep their mouth closed.

Just had a friend have his pit of 7 years turn on him. Mauled his left hand and then the neighbor came over with his 30-6, and shot his other hand in the process. Lost 3 fingers, but still has his life.

?? Was this during the attack?

Yes, the dog had the owner on his back, and from what I gathered, his left had was in the dog's mouth and the right hand was on his throat. The neighbor had never used the rifle and just shot at the dogs head and sadly he was a little off. He then dropped the gun and ran away leaving my friend to crawl over to the rifle and finish the job. Can't make this stuff up.

Crazy. He lost movement in half of his left hand (writing hand) and lost three fingers on the right; middle, ring, pinky

I hate the fellow thought a head shot was all that would do. I'm not saying I'd do any better, that's for sure. I hope I would do something smart and effective, but I hope I never have to find out. I'm a big fan of a swift kick because my legs are more effective than my arms and hands. And I think blows from the butt of the gun could also help. But if I am all tore up mentally or physically, I might do just about anything.

When I worked in the veterinary clinics, often if a vicious dog came at me, I'd shove my fist in their mouth like a big rock. Just something I did in the heat of battle. Eventually I began to "snatch" their lower jaw buy running my hand in their mouth and grasping their lower jaw very, very firmly. In all the cases I did either, the dogs would just open their mouths as wide as possible and seem to be "out of gear" just like throwing a bull's tail over his back throws the bull's rear legs out of gear well enough that you can castrate him without any kicking.

The above is just stuff I have done in the heat of the moment, not something I am suggesting anyone else do. You may want to try the jaw grasping thing on a friendly dog to see the response. It's really a bit odd. In all the times I did it, it never seemed to ocur to the dog that clamping down would get me too, rather they really just seemed to be overwhelmed by the fact that I "had them."
