So, what, a DOZEN or more "virus threads" get shut down.

But somehow, THIS shizzle thread is left running?

I feel saddened somehow.

So? I never got the answer to my question. Lots of complaints about wandering dogs; not a whole crapton of viable solutions to keep dogs on acreage (vs. a lot).

To whit: GPS electronic "fence" systems.

As I said before, glad you aren't my neighbor. You certainly don't fit the description of country folks here in Missouri.

Nor here in Florida, and agreed glad he's not my neighbor.

We tend to kinda watch out for each other. I know most every dog near here and feed or play with them. Every once in a while a stray shows up, but they're usually just lost and wander off soon.

If you harm something, you're gonna need a really good reason.

A family that lives near my Sons have two dogs that are kept in with electronic fence systems. Work very well.

We live on 95 acres, our farm property is 55 acres; my two dogs never leave our sight. No roaming allowed.

That's one solution, for people with smaller acreages or who just want to keep their pets in a small area. I am fortunate that both my past and current dogs stayed nearby when I"m home; it was when we were working that my last dog would stray. If I have another with that habit I won't hesitate to put an e-collar on her, to ensure that she stays in sight.

I’ve thought about the electronic fence for our Boston’s however it’s good for keeping them in but not so good about keeping the mountain lions out. They would be snacks for a lion.

I purchased the Shockwave when they first came out, specifically for the tractor because of it's short overall length and it's ability to stop the threat 4 legged or 2 legged.

It's a handful, so I added a SB Tactical pistol stabilizing brace to help me hold on to it.

I am currently waiting on my new upgrades for the Shockwave, a Crimson Trace LS-250G Lasersaddle/Green Laser (Monday), and a Streamlight TL-Racker Shotgun Forend Light.

I also fire rubber buckshot and rubber ball ammunition out of it.

Aguila has a 12ga "Minishell" which are 1 3/4" long that requires an adapter for loading these shorter shells, I have some but have not installed the adapter and fired these rounds yet.

Mossberg also makes a Shockwave in 20ga and 410 calibers.

I would guess that 85-90% of the time, I use the Judge to haze a black bear with success except for 1 time (before the Shockwave) I had to follow up with a 12ga shotgun.

KC

I figured the 12 gauge was a bit much to handle so I am leaning towards the 20 gauge. My original post was supposed to read 20 gauge but I left out 20.

As I said earlier, I had a problem with some neighbors' dog running as a pack. The owner of the main culprit eventually solved the problem by building the mother of all dog pens. So far, I have been able to give every dog on my ground a pass, but if one ever shows aggression at my wife or children, I will do what is necessary to protect my family.

Okay, how about a fun variance on this discussion. I was in the blind yesterday trying to call a nice tom in. Suddenly there was a large gray cat about 15 yards away, just standing there staring in my direction. My immediate assumption was it was a stray somebody had dumped. Cats don't normally last long around here. The coyotes, I think, get them. So having a bit of a soft heart I am wondering if I should rescue it. My wife would not be happy. My dog would not be happy. As I contemplating this, I notice it is a bit muddy. Okay, it has been out here a few days at least. Hmmm? It appears well fed. Well, I have quite a rat problem so it has probably been feasting on them. And then it hits me. That face, those ears, it is powerfully built from what I can see. It is facing straight at me. Wish I could see its profile or tail. After a couple of minutes, it turns and walks away. Yes, that is one "here kitty, kitty. Here kitty." that would not have ended well for me. It was a young bobcat and obviously wasn't starving.

Little Bob, there probably wouldn't have taken kindly to your tucking him under your arm and packing him home. Not to mention your doggies probably would not have made friends with him. :)
