I don't think he hijacked, He brought up a similar issue. I think it is better to bring it up in an existing thread than start a similar new one. On top of that I think the op should be the only one that should say anything about a thread hijack. If the op says can we please get back to my issue I think Jesse would understand and start a new thread with no hurt feelings. I also think thread nannies like you upset a thread more than a similar issue being brought up. Just my 2 cents.

Point taken. I'll not comment about etiquette any more so as not to high jack this thread.

I have dealt with neighbors dogs and here is my take on it. Friendly dogs that get out once in a while don't bother me. Friendly dogs that take a crap on my yard every single day because owners are too lazy to walk them get a call to animal control if the owner is unwilling to get off their asses. This happened with my neighbor. Talked to him 2 times and nothing changed. Then animal control gave him a $250 fine 2 times. That fixed the issue. Now if an aggressive dog charges my 18 month old daughter while we are out playing there will be no warning shots. I'll deal with the lawyers and law later if need be but my daughter will be safe. I'm tired of lazy a-hole owners that walk their dog by opening the front door. Get a fence, get a leash, or get rid of the dog.

Hope you have plenty of friends to bail you out of jail and a rich uncle when the idiots sue you!

Once again, your problem is with the owner and not the poor DUMB ANIMAL!

I'd rather I be in jail than attend anyone in my family's funeral that was killed by an aggressive dog. Let's vote on that choice

When I was about 6-7 years old ( early 1950's) our neighbors dog, from about 3/4 mile away kept coming over and getting into our hen house, at night, killing 2-3 hens a night. We caught him three times and tied him up and took him back home. He wasn't an aggressive dog, just killing our chickens. My Dad told idiot neighbor that dog would be delivered dead next time it happened. Sure enough a few nights later the dog came back and killed several hens. My dad shot the dog and delivered him back to neighbor next day. One day later, the neighbor drove up to the end of our lane and when my dog ran down to the end of drive he shot my dog.

Hope you have plenty of friends to bail you out of jail and a rich uncle when the idiots sue you!

Heres the deal with your scenario I would think your dad was in the right to do what he did legal or otherwise. Their dog was on his property killing his animals he had every right to shoot it. Now his neighbors that shot his dog on his property would go to jail. Now saying that I'm sure it changes from state to state. Like in NC I know that if you steal a mans dog it's a felony. If a dog came onto my property and was threatening my family I would not even hesitate to put it down. Again I say dogs are great companions and often become part of the family but no one should put a dogs life above that of a child.

I'm gonna let it ride, I pretty set on manure, and wanted to share it with my country friends..

Neighbors will be neighbors good or bad, one can only bend over so far in an effort to realize they have to live next to these people ( typically the smarter one), but there is a tolerance level, once that's reached, the line has been drawn.
Once the line is drawn, one must always think about their actions before they react, and more often than not when fighting fire with fire, try not to have it appear as a deliberate act...

Just saying a few words to live by, neighbor!

Here's a bump to this thread, first to ask the two folks with the problem if it was ever resolved, then to share one incident that I successfully dealt with, and finally to ask for ideas about an ongoing problem.

Many years ago a neighbor's dog had taken to using my backyard as its bathroom, accessing it through the broken fence. I asked the neighbor very politely on two occasions to fix the fence and keep his dog out of the yard, and nothing was done. One afternoon, after cleaning up an almost full grocery bag of doggie do, I took it next door, placed it on the welcome mat, and knocked. The "lady" of the house answered. I explained that I was returning something that belonged to her, and asked her to fix the fence. The stream of expletives that came out of the woman's mouth would have shamed a sailor, and was punctuated with a cigarette thrown at my face. I explained to her that if I have to clean up after her dog again, I'd file a complaint with the police. Then I left.

An hour later a thunderous set of impacts landed on my front door, and it was the neighbor's husband. After he'd run his foul mouth a few minutes (he had nothing on his wife), I interrupted him long enough to remind him I'd asked him several times to keep his dog out of the back yard, and told him if it happens again he'd be contacted by the police. I ended the conversation by telling him how sorry I felt that he was married to someone like that, and shut the door in his face.

Five minutes later I heard sawing and hammering in the back yard and witnessed the world's shoddiest fence repair job in progress. It was, however, good enough until I moved out of the place a year later.

Now, fast forward almost 35 years. I own 13 acres on a flag lot, and every time I use the easement, the neighbor's border collie chases my side-by-side Kubota or truck, and follows me up the drive, growling, hackles raised, lunging and barking at me all the way. If I'm on a motorcycle, he'll bite at the wheels and my feet. I've contacted animal control on several occasions. They've left phone messages and notes on the neighbor's gate, all to no avail. I have videos of the dog barking and lunging, and of it at my house. The fence idea is out: I've already been threatened with legal action if I put one up to protect my ingress/egress rights in the easement. Yesterday was another round of barking and lunging as I walked up to get the mail. My New Year's resolution is to resolve the issue. Today, lifting an idea from this thread, I'm going to write a letter to animal control, and another to the sheriff's office. I'm not optimistic it'll make any difference. Any other ideas?

Have you considered any type of dog repellant spray like postal carriers use? I am not sure of their effectiveness but it might be worth a try. I would try a citronella b

Have you considered a dog repellant spray like postal carriers use? I am not sure how effective they are but it might be worth a try. Maybe use two types, citronella base and a pepper spray base one. One or both might work on the dog and give him the right message plus with pepper spray the owners will get the message when the dog gets back home.

To keep dogs off the property, crushed red pepper flakes sprinkled at the boundary. Gets down into the thatch. Works 100% and lasts for months even after rain and mowing. They can smell it long before they get into it and will then use someone else's yard. On the harassment, I have lived in neighborhoods where nuisance dogs sometimes die and nobody quite knows why.

Get one good short video of the dog biting you then carry a can of the loudest color spray paint you can get unless you can get fluorescent mace.
