Thought about getting a standalone gas splitter but for now, here's my splitter...

Until last year, it was a maul and wedges for me...gettin' old, just don't have what it takes anymore. Now, I don't know how I did without a splitter all these years...

Fiskars - Super Splitting Axe-28 inch - 7854

Peter, how do you like that Fiskars axe? I have one of their small hatchets, a machete like tool and as well as loppers and they are all superb tools. I have regular 6 and 8 lb mauls that I split all my wood with now.

Nice to see your big Dane:) Both my Danes died in 2008:(. Molly died of DCM at 8.5 years and Delmar had a heart attack while bird hunting. He was only 6.5 years. Worst year of my life...losing both my big dogs.

I am going to buy the Northern Tools 3 pt splitter or the Split-Fire come spring.

I believe the northern tool is much cheaper. limited to 18" logs but also alot less I beam sticking out the back of the tractor....

It has been a great work horse for me so far...

Thats one of my great Danes - Thor. The color is blue and some people mistake them for Weimeraners. He is about 2 1/2, so he is really starting to fill out. I don't know what he weighs for sure cause I have not had him on a scale recently but probably about 170-180 .lbs.

Northland,

I love the fiskars. I was using an 8 .lb mauls, but the fiskars is only 4.5 .lbs yet It just seems to explode when it hits the wood. I think it works more on speed and the sharpness of the blade but I feel like I can swing it all day and not get tired. If you do get one, you might want to raise up the height of your splitting log as some people don't like the shorter handle. At some point I'll probably get a gas splitter, but not yet. I'm 48 and the only thing that bothers me is just the bending over and picking up of the round I am goping to split.

Sorry to hear about you losing your Danes. I have 2 more besides the one in the picture including an 8 1/2 yr old female. We lost her littermate when he was almost 6, its really tough losing them big old dogs.

I'm running the Speeco and really like it. I do some large oak logs and the vertical option makes life a lot easier. Plus my Fire box takes up to 27" logs and it only splits 26"

I hear you Peter;). I am 49 1/2 and hope to keep splitting wood by hand for a while still. Last year I cut down several very old yellow birch trees. The fibre is like meat and seems to run in every direction. Splitting those big old trees was time consuming, exhausting and frustrating. I borrowed an old gas powered splitter from a friend to take care of most of the them.

This week I am starting to cut down my dead maples. Beside being easy to split the maple burns much hotter.

I now use this method to minimize the picking up of the pieces of my splits. Try it-it really works well

Save your back while splitting wood
