Back to the original subject, has anybody found any more info on the new 03 tractors? I'm really pondering a trade of my 5103 for a 5105 4WD or a new 5203 4WD. Anybody seen any pictures? Pricing? Specs?

the only info i could find on them was on the JD website. here's the secret though, if you go through the residential part of the site to get to "utility tractors" it will show you the old versions but if you go to agricultural they have the updated versions of them. theres some specs, and a few pics explaining the new features on there. for instance, youll notice that the frame is even painted green on these, the tires are clasical R1's instead of the R5's(whatever that is they have on them now). you can build your own, and then get quotes from your local dealers. the comparison part, and parts catalog isnt up yet. just remember to go to agricultral and not residential. then scroll down just a little bit and click on tractors(youll know youre at the right page if you see a radar looking thing and it says "something big is coming to your farm). yure on the right track then so just click on tractors. thatll take you right to it. as soon as you come to the page of the 5003 series youll notice the new green frame on them. hope this helps! this is the only place ive found new info about these though.....

Only posting because I too had wondered what tires the 2007 and prior year 5103...03 models came with. They are in fact R1 tires, though I notice the funky tread. I think they would be considered R1W tread, which is an R1 tread with a bit more tread depth intended for longer wear when used on roads. We're used to seeing R1 tires look a certain way but in fact there are some variations in the tread pattern that are still considered just plain ol R1.

$4,330.00

So $18,696 total MSRP for a 4wd 5103. Based on a February 2007 quote, the 5105 with 4wd had an MSRP of $23,858, not including popular options like bigger tires, a loader valve, or telescoping draft links. In fact, the 2wd 5105 bare had an MSRP of $18989, or slightly more than a 4wd new 5103. However, I paid a little over $21k out the door with all those options, and also including winter engine kit (basically a manifold heater and HD battery), freight, setup, and filled tires. The 5105 has significantly more PTO hp than the new 5103 and, IMHO, a slightly more convenient transmission shifting design. I guess I would compare features carefully and see which one looks like a better bet on that basis.

I think I want that doggie in the window. Probably a 5203 MFWD w/ loader. I posted my 5103 on tractorhouse today.

Unless I can get a good deal on a 5105. I'll keep you all posted.

Yes, thanks. I always go in through the Ag section, but the initial 5003 page sill has an old 5003 pic, so I thought they hadn't updated it yet. I built a 5203 4WD with 522 loader. It came to just above $28k. I faxed it to my dealer this morning. We'll see what he comes up with.

Okay, here's the scoop:

Dealer will give me $15,000 for my trade (5103 w/ 512 loader). I will probably try to sell it myself if I go this route. Similar tractors are listed $17-19k on tractorhouse.

Basically, I can get a 5105 4WD w/ 522 loader or a new model 5103 w/ 522 loader for the same price of $24,900. If I trade, I think I'd probably look to a 5203, though.

Any comments?

First blush --- looks like very competitive pricing. Got my attention! That will change some 40hp pto buying decisions for a number of folk's.

Couple of questions about the new 03 series... Looks like they have the standard transmission configuration that Deere made available on the older 870-1070 series --- a 3F, 1R snychro tranny with 3 ranges --- is that correct?

If so, I would think that would be an advantage over the 05 series. They are a 4F, 1R synchro tranny with only 2 ranges, I believe. There has been some discussion here on TBN that the lack of a "C" range was frustrating to some owner's. Complained that while baling or some heavy mowing work was either too slow or too fast and they were wishing for that middle gearing.

What are the HP ratings for the 03's? Why would Deere lower the horsepower? Doesn't seem like a good marketing move, IMO. Would further make the choice between the 990 or 4120 not as clear as it currently is for the 05 series.

Have to go have a look at the hydraulic GPM specs. And other options; i.e. 3rd-4th SCV? Draft control sensing 3 pt?

That said, this new series might be the "cat's pajamas" for all those small farmer's and landowner's who want a basic, git R done, machine!
