Finger off the trigger

I cannot think of a single trip out with the guys when I didn't hear that mentioned or say it myself. Just one of those things you get used to repeating. Not preachy at all, just friendly reminders.

donn12,

It is always good to take some safety lessons. Your pics on your first post show your finger inside the trigger guard. Bad habit to have.

Have fun, but be safe!

That is an obvious but great tip. I have a very healthy respect of guns, chainsaws etc and I don't think you can ever be too careful.

Off topic a bit, but my grandson has a shirt with: "Guns don't kill people it's mostly the bullets."

No life lessons just thought it was funny; agree completely with the finger off the trigger, had a Deputy Sheriff friend with a negligent discharge and he shot regularly, just got careless in a high stress situation. Luckily no one was injured.

During my years on the police department, the number of accidental discharges just seemed incredible.

This is a classic accidental discharge, along with the cop in the classroom.

Bird and JB, it sure is scary how many there are and you don't even want to know what the public range looks like; holes in the restroom doors etc.

Thankfully I have ranges on our property.

In all of the years I have been around firearms I have only been around one truly "accidental discharge". My son was working some gas tube issues out on his M4 Patrol Rifle on the range in our back yard when he had a "hang fire". He served in the Navy on a VBSS unit then in the Army with the 82nd where fired a gazillion rounds through M14s, M4s M249s etc. and never had one.

Unfortunately he was walking when it happened and it went right through his foot.

Oh, I believe you about those public ranges! Most (if not all) here in PA are unmanned and there are some seriously stupid a-holes buying firearms

So, your boy had a hangfire? When that happens, we (when I was in the Navy) were taught to keep aiming the rifle down range for 30-60 seconds. If the round didn't fire in that time, the rifle was to be unloaded and the bad round ejected from the chamber. Why was he walking with a "live" round in the chamber?

I've been right next to two, but I'll mention one other first... My old boss was cleaning his rifle in his van up north. Discharged and shot a big honking hole in the side of the van. He drove that van with that hole for over 10 years that way. A constant reminder to himself.

The two next to me... Snowshoe hunting one day, one hunter was loading his 410 Mossberg when it went off. I don't know (neither does he) how it went off, but it sprayed shot onto the driveway, ricocheting onto the house. He couldn't let that go all day... just kinda hung with him.

The other was a range trip with the guys. I can't remember what model pistol it was, but the decocker mechanism failed him. He pointed the gun down and away to decock and it went off.

If the term "You can't be too careful" applies to anything, it's firearms. (And digging a septic field on pure sand with rented machinery, but that's another story.)

In the land of firearms instructors there is no such thing as "accidental" discharges, only "negligent" discharges....

I pretty much agree with that...unless there's a mechnical failure of some sort.
