New Holland/Ford 555E engine oil issues

Yeah Bill, these types of problems are the worst to fix.

Eddie, the power to run everything will come off the starter solenoid. Either by a second wire attached with the positive bat cable or one of the solenoid terminals. That wire goes into the cab and to the ignition switch. Then power is distributed from there based on ignition switch position.

So find the supply wire leaving the solenoid and make sure it's powered. Then remove the ignition switch or expose it's terminals and find a powered wire, which would be the other end of the one you just identified. If you have no powered terminal at the switch that implies your wire is broken somewhere.
My 555A has had this problem before I got it. There's a jumper wire added at the solenoid and runs to the switch.
Confirm or eliminate this, then we'll look farther if needed.

eddie throwing parts at this is a waste of time, you need to slow down, get a meter, and just test until you don't find power. in all reality this should be easy to find, when EVERYTHING dies, then its one of the main circuits.

I pulled the wires off of the key and all of them are dead. The red one is the largest, so I assumed that it's the hot wire. I'll look at the wiring a lot closer to see where it's going. I'm tempted to remove the starter so I can get a better look at the wires.

With the engine dead, the loader is down, and making it hard to get to the starter.

It's gonna be in the 20's tomorrow, and it's sleeting today, and another storm should be here Saturday. I'm trying to use this down time to think smart about this, and come up with a plan.

Mine is the larger red wire. It should have power at the ignition switch all the time. My machine has a main disconnect that if turned off kills everything. It switches the positive battery cable. When turned off the positive cable at the starter is dead. I think you said you always have power to the starter? For example, if the machine is in a "won't start" situation right now is there still power to the starter? Just trying to drainstorm for the problem.

I think this is going to end up being something simple. Previous owner of mine gave up on researching the wire break and just ran a new one. I don't blame him. It would be a major job to open that entire wiring harness looking for the problem.

My disconnect was on the ground. It was a black, brittle type of plastic that fell apart years ago. I threw it away and haven't had a disconnect in over a decade. I should probably put one back in. I mostly used it when I lived in town and had it sitting out here on it's own. Most thieves would have figured it out, but it was part of what I did to slow them down that made me feel better when I went home in the evening.

My positive battery cable goes straight to my starter. That is the only place that I have power, that I've found so far. I pulled all the wires off of the key and checked every one of them. Zero had power. I'm guessing that the largest wire is the one that should have power. It's bright red. It's dead.

I might run a jumper from the battery to that red wire and see what happens. If it starts, I could move it to my shop and out of the mud to work on it.

ok once it goes to the starter it goes somewhere else, follow it from there. starters are generally nothing more then terminal blocks for the wiring.

After spending a few minutes looking at the wiring diagrams and trouble shooting, I would run a jumper wire from the positive battery cable to the large red wire at the ignition switch. This should activate everything and restore the ability to start/run the machine.

If it does, then I'd raise the FEL and attach the safety block. Then run a bypass wire from the starter solenoid to the ignition switch.

If it still does nothing let me know and I'll research the next phase.

The fact that you say there's no power to the ignition switch tells me that wire is broken somewhere.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Dang it, I should have read this response before posting mine.

Yes, run a jumper from the positive battery cable to the ignition switch terminal that has the large red wire.

I'm an old school Ford guy. I never have liked the solenoid being the connection terminal to power the ignition/run system. Too many times laying on the ground under GM vehicles because the solenoid failed or something yanked the wires off. I prefer the solenoid to be on the firewall or somewhere accessible. In Eddie's case you can barely see the starter with the FEL lowered.

Hopefully he can run a jumper wire and get the machine started and moved to his shop and parked with the FEL raised.

its cost saving measure, they have to run it heavy to the starter might as well save money is the mindset
