USDA AG Handbook 590, titled PONDS - Planning, Design, Construction is one source I've found that contains alot of useful info pertaining to ponds. Perhaps doing a search on it will yield something. Also, take a look at PONDBOSS.com

How long would this take with a Bobcat or Compact? My guess... 1 year full time.

That valve looks like what they use on outlets from the irrigation canals around here. I have seen them for up to about 10 inches. Maybe you need to check with the people in your area who operate the irrigation ditches and canals

I miss having a pond. The new place doesn't. Yet. I wonder, though, before I start moving dirt, does the DNR or any other government body have to be involved? There's a spring fed stream through the northeast corner. It in effect cuts that ground off from any access except four wheel or walking. The stream is from 6" deep to maybe a foot at the far north end. IT is a constant and heavy flow. Won't freeze even at 5 degrees! I'd like to put a pond in on the 'other' side of that stream, since it's not useable anyway. And I'd like to have a goes-inta and goes-outa using some of that stream water. This stream is noted, by the way, on any maps of the area. Strange, considering how small it is.
