the smart thing to do is mount a stub axle on the side and bolt on a whole new hub/tire.
that way you have an extra set of bearings, hub, breaks everthing.
They actually make that. They also make a tube with a flange that fits over the axle via the 4 bolts that hold on the brake backing plate. If you scorch a axle stub you remove the hub and brake, then mount it on via 4 bolts to the brake flange and off you go till you can get it fixed right.
