Just crossed 4000 miles with a 19.2mpg average.
19.2 is very good. That's a full mpg higher than my Ecoboost, its average is 18.3. It's a Super Crew FX4 with 3.73 gears.
Have you hand calculated a few tanks to verify the dash? My ford is never off more than .2 mpg, so it's very accurate.

I hand calculated for the first 3-4 tanks to get an idea, and it's very close to the dash computer -- usually within 0.1 or 0.2 mpg. Thing is, there is some error in refueling since we can't get the tank to the same perfect "full" every time, and being off 0.1 or 0.2 gallons on a 26 gallon tank will introduce plus/minus 0.1-0.2 mpg error. I'd almost trust the dash computer more than hand calculations, as it's using realtime mpg = mph/gph data.
During weeks when I only commute highway with the truck, it usually ends up at 20-21 mpg at the end of a tank. Tanks with mixed driving, work, or towing tend to average 17-20mpg by the end. The current tank sat at 13.2 mpg after a weekend of firewood hauling on my property, then crept up to 19.4 mpg by this morning's commute. Highway miles really impact the average.
Thought I'd bump my thread for a 1 year update. Truck is doing great, and gets used heavily for projects hauling lumber and building materials, and towing my 7x16 trailer (tow about 1-2 times a month). No problems to report. Truck was in once for a recall (computer programming) where I had them check and adjust the alignment, then again for my annual state inspection, then once more for the free 7500 mile service (oil change, tire rotation, etc -- those are free for the first 2 years). Gas mileage continues to be great, though I noticed a slight dip during winter months. At just over 8600 miles, the average is 19 mpg, which is excellent considering all the hauling and towing the truck does. During weeks when I just use the truck for commuting, it's typical to get 20-21mpg per tank, and on a long trip I will see 22-23mpg. They are so close, any little factor could sway me in one direction or the other. Steering and handling continues to be a strong point for the GM trucks, and is unmatched in the class. Ford did not improve the steering or handling with the new F-150 that I can tell -- it continues to have typical numb/disconnected steering feel. That is disappointing, considering they use electric power steering, which makes it trivial to impart some sort of handling feel/feedback even if it's artificial. So that would be one factor that would keep me interested in the GMC.
