Generally what I do is build a shelf at the bottom where the weld will start. Go side to side to establish the width of the weld I want. Once I have the shelf built I pick my arm / shoulder up a little and point the gun straight in, (90-degrees) to the plate or slightly down. I hold this gun angle and work side to side and start traveling up hill.

Here is a picture from Lincoln, I personally would only use that much down angle if I was really carrying a lot of iron / wanted a very wide weld.
