NH 273 making steel wool :-(

I picked up a used NH273 last week, and tried it out yesterday for the first time.

It seemed to work pretty well until I worked it a little too hard and sheered the driveline sheer pin.

Since I don't have a supply of sheer pins on hand and because it was late in the day, I drove it up to the house to head in for the evening. I gave it a quick checkover and noticed that a few of the pickup fingers had what looks like a kitchen steel wool scrubber wrapped around them. In other words, long narrow strands of metal all tangled up.



Not a welcome sight on any piece of machinery.

What might be causing this? I didn't see any wear on the fingers except at the tips.

I don't yet have a manual (will order one tomorrow.)

Can't say exactly but it can't be good. Somepart of the machine ismaking steel shavings! Run it slowly empty and have someone right ther

e looking and listening to it. Why did your sheer bolt break? maybe that had something to with it. Use the proper replacement sheer bolt (very importatnt) and run it by hand, or very slowly with the pto.

Probably mismatched parts. Thick damp hay may shear a pin also some level of mechanical failure.
Get a pack of shear pins probably grade 2 (soft).
I would spin the baler by hand with no hay in it and watch the machine.
disconnect pto and turn the wheel by hand.

Re the shear pins, use what the manual calls for. JD's are special but roughly equivalent of gr 8 bolts, new MF's the same. Using a soft bolt results in frequent breaking and damage to the hardened insert for the shear bolt from the smearing of the bolt out past the hole when it shears rather than clean break.
