No Joy Joystick

   / No Joy Joystick #81
This post cannot die until we have everyone being joyous. A friend of mine I could guarantee would not only modify the no joy joy stick, it would come out so custom folks would buy the tractor for the joystick. He would cast his own aluminum side covers for his motorcylcles, change the doors on a VW bug to suicide doors and have it look like it came from the factory that way. Truly an artist with metal. His metal shop teacher in high school said he was the most talented student he has ever had go through his class, way beyond all others. He become a Navy pilot, now flies for United but with the slowdown is back to doing metal work on the side. I want to talk to him about building a dump trailer, not only can the guy weld anything, he can machine and cast parts. Amazing guy. Rat...

RaT, I'm certain your friend could do a much better job with this joystick, but what would I do with my two old rusty hose clamps? I've become attached to them (pun intended) and my joystick just wouldn't feel right without them. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Do you think your friend could design a place on that new joystick where I could put the hose clamps just for "old-times-sake"? ...heh heh heh /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

174 hours. Mine just busted for the first time today. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Probably first of several times. I'm going to try to get NH to get me 2: one to use now and the other to get someone to modify.

Hi Jim.

Here is the dealer modified joystick that I installed on our 40D. After looking it over closely, I'm satisfied with how they beefed it up and don't see how this one could fail as easily. Hopefully some of the other TBN members will be getting modified joysticks from dealers instead of the lame OEM one. Time will tell. Thanks, Matt.

Thanks for the photo, Matt. That is definitely not going to break, but I can't see the screw holes for the plastic cover with the turtle/rabbit buttons. It's very hard to take a high contrast picture of something black, especially in the shade. Did they drill through the flat plate stock and the round stock too? I think you have the best solution I've seen so far. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Matt,

I am going to have a friend of mine rework my broken No-Joy-Joystick in a similar manner. I do not have the metal working resources for such a task but this guy is a craftsman. I will post pictures when finished and report on any problems.

BTW, did the electrical line still fit in the handle after adding all that steel?

AAAAARRRGGGGH!

I'm in the middle of a break !! While enjoying the lovely weather and taking a break, I decided to remove my loader control handle ( TC35D ) and look at the support.

It's just starting to fail. I have paint cracking in the area around the lower screw hole and the upper part ( curved angle ) has deflected about 10 degrees from straight towards what would be the operators station.

Being the type of guy that I am, I called the dealer to see what a new one was worth ( so that I could give it to my machine shop bud and have him beef it up ). They want $ 27.00 for a 5" piece of drilled angle and a 4" length of threaded rod.

Oh well...New Holland gets this one as warranty. If it was under $ 10.00, it would be easier for me to buy one and frankenstein it. My dealer is about 1 hour away ... road trip!!

You have to love dealer support....

I just called my dealer...they are quite aware of the problem and will send me a new one UPS. They said to keep using mine until the new one arrives and then send it back up to them when I make the swap. No questions asked. Hopefully it will make the next few days..I'll just limit the loader work.

I think the new one will get a bit of reinforcement prior to installation though. There is actually quite a bit of room inside that plastic handle. The could have...and maybe should have ...run that rod stock all the way up to the top of the angle. There would still be plenty of room for the wire. The round stock is 7/16" and the handle has almost a 7/8" diameter passage.

Ordered a replacement Monday - they didnt have them in stock. In the meanwhile, I acquired a little MAPP gas torch and some brazing rods. Today, I lapped the angle iron pieces then brazed them together. I put the plastic joystick on the metal part fastening with a single screw on the remaining hole through the handle's bottom hole. I cycled in a few times and it held. We'll see.....

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your "joining the club." I thought yours was going to be the one that lasted forever. I hope you get it beefed up and it doesn't happen again. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
