Noise in Differential, Gear Box, PTO?

There is a substantial ammount of cast iron involved so it is sometimes difficult to determine exactly where the noise is comming from. One thing about removing the clutch inspection covers though is that if that is where the noise is comming from(clutch fingers dragging on a bad throwout bearing), you will definitely be able to hear it differently when run.

When the clutch is halfway pushed in, the outer tube is stopped and the PTO shaft which runs inside is turning at engine RPM speed. This shaft runs to just below the front of the lift box where it is joined, selectively, with a second shaft by a splined collar operated by the "main" pto control lever by your right heal, this second shaft runs to a set of gears which give you HI LO and Netural PTO speed. disconect the "main" Pto lever and see if the noise is still there, if so it is something rubbing between these two shafts, or perhaps something in the clutch. If not, you know it is in the PTO gears and you can take the lift box off and see what is out of sorts.

I agree with bluechip's thinking based on what you can do to change the noise and how the system works.

Just for GP........... here are some pic's of and 254 & 354 clutch looking inside. You will be able to see your adjustments for the PTO, main clutch [gap between pressure plate and bearing], roll pins for the bearing fork. Also look for fine metal particals [dust].... etc

Just in case there has been any mis-understanding about the "NOISE", the grinding noise I have referred to is NOT like what you would hear if your brake shoes on your car were wore out. The NOISE sounds like trying to shift gears without using the clutch.

I pulled the inspection plate. No burnt smell, no dust or metal particles in bottom, release bearing (Throw-out?) was not stuck or rough when turned by hand. Release leavers ~ .15 inch from bearing. Clutch pedal free play about 2.5 inches.

I adjusted pedal until release leavers were about .05 from bearing, same noise occured. Then adjusted until leavers were about .25 from bearing, same noise.

I did not measure finger spacing on main or pto clutch as I had nothing with me to measure accurately with.

I do not understand why with tractor running, you can press clutch, shift to a gear, no noise, until you release clutch, or press clutch while in gear and noise starts at top of pedal and quits at bottom. I could understand pressing clutch, and get noise while shifting to a gear.

Read manual several times, Read post on JOHNS site, Service Bulletin 11 on Tractor-Outlet, and pics you supplied.

I am about to try to adjust Main clutch later this PM. Will adjust 1/2 turn TIGHTER on each finger and try it, then if necessary another 1/2 turn. Will check release leaver space from bearing each time, and adj pedal also.

Any warnings, hints, instructions etc. would be greatly appreaciated before I start.

Yall are a great bunch of people, and all comments have been appreciated.
