North Texas "cold snap"

We have a disaster here. At least that's what my wife thinks.:D The snow has gotten so deep on the satellite dish that her DirecTV reception is blocked. So she's been trying to figure out how to clean off that dish on the roof. Well, actually she's been trying to figure out how to get me to go clean off that dish.:D

I always mount my dish where it is easy to get at it to service it just for such "disasters". Learned that from multiple years in Detroit and Chicago;)

Yep, it's getting lighter outside, but snowing as heavy or heavier than ever.:D And the NWS radar does not make it appear the end is near.

Bird: Another thought maybe hitting the back of dish with water from garden hose or even better Hot water.

Maybe it got so much snow on there that the weight caused it to slide off.:D Actually, the official temperature is 32, but my thermometer in the breezeway shows 36 and, while it's still snowing pretty heavily, the snow is melting off the trees pretty fast and I'm sure it melted off the satellite dish, too, so we've got our reception back now.

Hope this the last of TX cold weather.

Last year we had snow in April. Big, fat snow flakes that didn't stick, but were fun to watch coming down.

Well we have broke the 10" mark,,,hmmmm??? Pulled eleven folks out of the ditch today, got ran off of the road by a lady who could only say "NO savvy"" and took off. Off the road I went along with 30 feet of bob wire fence by the time I got out.

I was livid to say the least. Not at the damage, but how it happened. I guess it was better than a collision but at least she would have "stuck" around.

30 miles = 5 hours on the country roads.

So you and Jim have been out being good Samaritans, while I didn't even get either of our vehicles out of the garage all day. We may have had as much as 10" of snow but I haven't tried to measure it. It was snowing before daylight this morning and still snowing when it got dark tonight with no breaks in the downfall.

Snowing in Texas.... reminds me of a few political jokes I can't tell here. ;)

Western, it sounds like you had a very frustrating day of helping others and getting nothing but trouble in return. After the last time we had a snow and I cleared the road, I decided that helping people was a exercise in frustration. Today, I couldn't even see where I was driving from all the snow in my face. I needed goggles or a face shield. I was afraid that somebody would come up behind me and I wouldn't see them. I decided that if I was going to do anymore to the road, it would have to be after the snow stops. The fact that I couldn't see my instrument panel or side panels had a lot to do with it. I had a hand broom with me and had to keep sweepin' things off to keep the falling snow from burying me. I got out of the seat long enough to hook up a chain from my neighbor's truck, and by the time I came back to the seat it was covered in 1/2" of snow. My wife called me a snowman by the time I got back home. Without a cab, it was just too hard to be driving up and down the county road waitin' for somebody to sneak up on me while I wasn't looking. We've had close to a foot of snow here and it's still coming down slowly. Tomorrow is another day.:)

Isn't it invigorating sitting in a puddle of water!:D:D:D

Everything has came to a standstill. We've had a record twelve plus inches of snowfall. But it hasn't done all the freezing thing yet, a good thing.

Well, the snow has stopped and things are clearing up. If I can find my back blade in all the snow, I may get out later and try to clear the driveway and road some. We lost power just for a short time last night, but I didn't know it until I got up this morning and saw all the clocks flashing. So far, this has not been a big deal for us except the shear quantity of snow.:)

Egon, luckily I brushed the snow off my tractor seat, and I wasn't out long enough for the moisture to soak through. I was toasty warm in my snowmobile suit and my mad bomber hat, but my hands started to get cold because water was just beginning to penetrate through two pairs of gloves.

Edit: Here's some pictures of the snow this morning.

Yes, it finally quit snowing, and so far I consider us very lucky. Of course the snow is even deeper than yesterday. Our power line comes from the back of the property through a live oak tree. I do a little pruning every year to keep the limbs far enough from the power line to be OK during most of the wind we have, but the weight of the snow has limbs down on the power line.

And in spite of the snow on the dish, we still have satellite reception. I'm guessing when we lost reception, it was not the snow on the dish, but the snow and clouds in the sky blocking reception, as it does in heavy rains.

Oh boy! Bird you have a situation there. Keep your fingers crossed and hope for a thaw soon. Hopefully we will get a thaw before we get much wind.

I haven't measured since last night, but we are over 12". Lost electric yesterday afternoon to the well house for about 3 hrs, so fortunate there.

Jim, I tried to "push off" the snow at a low water crossing we all have to cross here. All I had was my bucket, so I mostly made a mess. Took about 30 minutes to get the 8-9" off and was loading up with more snow as I left! I would have done more but I was short on fuel and well, just wasn't necessary.

Actually quite pretty outside this a.m. I have to go get my wife since she had to stay over. so I think this time i will mind my own business unless I see someone that is in some kind of danger.

Still haven't looked at my truck fully..LOL figure it wont get better and i can deal with it after the global warming thingy is over..:)

Yep, it really was pretty this morning, even though I can't say I wanted it.:D And I don't know how much we got; but it was somewhere between 6 and 12 inches. The NWS shows Denton got .88" of "precipitation". I assume that was the snow after it melted, and that's pretty close to what my own rain gauge had.

Correct -- some of the rain gauges even have a heater to melt the snow. Thus "precip" does not = "snow level" . You just need a yard stick and a space that's level and preferably clear of obstructions to measure snow level. You could walk around the property taking several measurements then average 'em.

I made the mistake of leaving my rain gauge out about 2 winter storms ago and it cracked and broke! I really liked this one, it held 6" plus, was sturdy and was free from Chisholm Trail Farm Credit....well maybe it wasn't REALLY free!?:D

Jim, nice pics. Looks like you guys really got the white stuff. Don't fret the "cab-less" tractor. I've got one too. I try to pull the seat over onto the steering wheel when I get off and it's raining, snowing or it's 110 deg outside!

Bird, I know the feeling. I've got a few trees I've got to trim as well.

I think 12" of snow is usually in the area of 1" precip. It varies a lot of course. When they take snow pack surveys in late Winter here - to predict flooding potential - they push a hollow tube down to the ground in the snow, pull it out then weigh it to get the actual water content. 'A pint's a pound the world around' is a good old saying.
Dave.
