North Texas "cold snap"

I'm in trouble now. I thought the sink drain issue was resolved as the water had went down. The wife comes home and starts a load of laundry which drains into the same pipe. I hear an OH CHIT!!!!!!!! and water gushing from the laundry room. She get it shut down about the time the plug clears and everything goes down, except what has gone on the floor. I say, OH BTY I think the drain pipe might still be frozen.

Thankfully the laundry room had ceramic tile. Maybe I won't have to spend the night in the dog house.

Why it got so cold here the other day that my duck decoys had icicles on their bills...then, I noticed one that didn't have any...he moved a little different, too, so I removed him from the spread for the sake of conformity;)

More recently, all the decoys have stopped moving... all stock tanks are iced over. First time this has happened in at least 5 years.

Drains can and will be a problem ... on cold nights I pour a touch of antifeeze in there to help the pee trap ...

Hahaha!:D:D Eddie, I bet you don't listen to the wife again when she says, "go ahead 'Hon walk out"! BTW, what did you do with that rifle at the end of the video?:rolleyes::D

I had one line bust this weekend. Thankfully, it was on a line I don't need until spring so I capped it off. BTW, I used a hacksaw to cut it instead of the handy grip cutter since the line was so cold. I figured the PVC would be too brittle to use the cutters. I used them on old PVC once and it just shattered it. Also, I think we have a frozen drain down at the farm house. I let the shower "drip" at the far end of the house and my daughter came home to find it had overran the tub and had the carpet soaked! I'm ready for a thaw! Along with all this I've had to bust ice all weekend for the livestock. It's supposed the get up to 50 deg by Wednesday and I'm ready!

For tight spots or on old pipe, I like the stainless steel cable with the red handles on the end. I have cut many pieces of PVC with those. I've also heard that you can use fine nylon twine to do the same thing, but I figure if it gets hot enough to melt the PVC, that nylon twine is in serious jeopardy.

Thanks for the hint, Jim. I'll have to get me one. This situation was crazy. My heat lamp was actually closer to this line than the pressure switch/brass tee area. It didn't get hot enough to melt just burst along the pipe like a freeze bust...? Anyway, I'll fix it later. I was just thankful to have the fittings. I actually used a threaded female connection and put a plug in it. You know how it is; you can have 1000 fittings in a barrel an still not have the one you need!! Not to mention I live 25 miles from Lowes or
Ace hardware!

We have had two weeks of cold weather. Today its gets up to the 40s and by Friday maybe almost to 60! Woo HOO!

Last Friday afternoon I had enough daylight to start up the tractor, replace the MX 6 with the box blade and exchange the 4n1 bucket for pallet forks. Then I started moving some logs from a tree I cut down a week previous. After 90 minutes my good warm gloves were not so warm anymore and my finger tips where starting to hurt.:rolleyes: Thankfully I got everything done after 120 minutes just as the sun went down. COLD it was with a strong wind.

I was going to cut up the logs on Saturday but my kids basketball started up. I was a good daddy and watched them play in a warm gym instead of cutting up the logs in the cold. :D;):p

This morning the weatherman said it would be 18 in Raleigh. We are 30ish miles southwest of Raleigh and usually warmer. The porch temp was 18. Got in the truck and it said *** 13 ***. Drove down the hill to the gate and it was **** 11 ****!.

Usually when we get to town the temp goes up. Not today! Stayed at 11 for 5 or so miles to the river. Ponds are frozen over and parts of the lake I drive across are completely frozen over. Never seen that before.

Ticks and snow.

When we went to close on our land the date was the end of January but we got almost 24 inches of snow which prevented our soil test from getting done. The selling agent said she was out on another property in the snow and found a tick on her! Our ground is FROZEN hard which I have not seen before either. Up until this cold hit us the ground was so wet it was like walking across a super wet sponge. Not now. Where I process the logs into firewood, the soil and can rut up if I am not careful with an empty tractor much less a load of logs.

Twas not a problem on Friday.:eek::)

It is time for us to have a big snow storm. The last one was in 2000 and 2003 when we had almost 24 inches out of one storm. During the 90's we had quite a few storms over 4-6 inches which is alot for us. We are overdue and if we get a storm soon the ground is COLD and the snow is going to stick around for awhile.:eek:

Later,
Dan
