Obesity, A Southern tradition.

Oh yes!!!! I grew up in Krystal Kountry and recall the days (that now seem) long ago when they made waffles fresh hot & buttery, cooked up eggs on the griddle just right along w/ nice hot grits. What a breakfast!!! Then there was lunch and their world famous burgers. Sadly all that remains are the burgers. Now its breakfast in a cup sort of thing that everybody and their cousin does.

I moved away for a number of yrs but never failed to go Krystaling when I was home. Now that Im back here FT I eat there once (and sometimes more)/week.

BTW I lived in NC for a short time and your closest 'fix' is Asheville. Sad but true NC seems not to NOT be the culinary center of the world and just barely can be called a southern state. :D Shocking but true VA has NO Krystals. Whats up w/ that??

LOL...I completely ignore the calorie sheets the fast food places publish. Hey, NO one should be doing fast food b/c its healthy. Its only supposed to taste good. :) I think Hardies is on the right track in that regard....the bigger and greasier it is the better. :D

Nothing tastes so good as when cooked in lard. :)

We had a brand new Krystal's open in our area last year, in an area with every other kind of fast food place imaginable and it's already closed up. It just never went over well here.

We had the same thing happen in Longview. A Krystals opened up a few years ago and within 6 months it was closed and for sale. Store is still vacant.

We had a couple open up in Houston a few years ago. One near us on busy 1960. It's still open. Growing up in Mississippi I was in Krystal country as a kid. Only good thing about "shopping" in Jackson with Grandma and Mom was lunch at Krystals! As usual I think they tasted better then. I don't eat there to often.

We only ate lunch at the new Krystal once. They had almost no business so the service was good, and fast. They had a sampler or such that we ate to try out the different stuff. The original or famous Krystal burger wasn't very good at all, but the other little burger was, the little chicken sandwich was good, and the pups (miniature chili dogs) were as good as any I've ever eaten.

Wow...cant believe Im reading this. People who make such brazen confessions in a public forum!!!! I thought this was supposed to be a family friendly website. :D You guys are in REAL danger of being stricken from the list of Truly Southern States. Its scandalous!!!! :) OTOH it just means more for us true believers....I mean die-hards. :D How do you all feel about fried catfish??? Remember theres a right and wrong answer to this. :D :D

I'm about as southern as you can get. Born in Alabama, have lived in SC most of my life but have lived in Florida on two occasions.....although I'm not sure Florida counts as a southern state anymore does it?

In any case, I am blessed to be thin and have a normal cholesterol despite having no discipline or will power whatsoever at the table. And despite all that we know about (or think we know about) fried foods.....I love fried food. All kinds. Including fried catfish..all kinds. But, just like any broad category of food, fried food has to be done right. There is an art to it. Just because it is fried doesn't mean it is good.

And I really don't buy the whole notion that any regions health is dictated by whether or not the food is fried or not. Most every major cuisine has staples of fried food, including Italian and Chinese. Maybe not French....but that just figures.

I think what you eat and how much is as important as how it is prepared.

Eating a fried chicken breast is much better than eating a sandwich piled high with salami, etc etc.

And by the way, Crisco and lard are not the same thing. Crisco is pure vegetable shortening. Lard is pure animal fat. Both are pure fat but vegetable fat is much better than animal fat.

I once went to a Bill Cosby concert. That man is a comedic genious by the way. He was talking about his childhood, how he was raised, disciplined and what they ate. His opening comment was that when he was young, "There was no such thing as cholesterol or child abuse!" :D

Ah, the good old days. And who says dying of a massive coronary while sitting on your front porch swing at age 60 is worse than slowly dying in a nursing home at age 85?

The problem is you only get to experience one so theres no way to objectively compare. Someone has to be first and frankly its a choice you dont get to make anyway. I think more people are killed by the worry induced by what they eat or dont than the food itself. :) Myself, I plan to enjoy life and fried food. :D
